• Built on two levels
• Agora- marketplace
• Acropolis-high city (on hilltop)
• Temples dedicated to gods/goddesses
• Main city-walled, public buildings, homes

3. Early Governments

• Monarchy-government in which a king or queen
  exercises central power
• Aristocracy-rule by a landholding elite
• Oligarchy-power is in the hands of a few,
  powerful people (usually business class)
• Tyrant one strong leader, usually took power by
  force. Not always a negative thing.
• Democracy a government controlled by its
  citizens either directly or through
  representatives.

• Technology-iron weapons (650 b.c.)
• Method of fighting-Phalanx-a military formation
  of foot soldiers armed with spears and shields.
• Created unity
• Defense in the hands of ordinary citizens
• Reduced class differences
