Election of 1800
  • Between Adams and Jefferson
  • Jefferson and his running mate, Aaron Burr,
received the same number of votes in the

Characteristics of Jeffersons Presidency

Louisiana Purchase
  • The US buys the Louisiana Territory from France
for only 15 million (about 3 cents per acre!)
  • This DOUBLES the size of the US!
  • Jefferson appointed Meriwether Lewis to lead an
    expedition
  • Lewis chose William Clark as second in command
  • A Native American woman, Sacajawea, served as
    interpreter and guide

8
Embargo Act
  • America will, in 1807, begin to face problems
    with the British
  • (seizing US vessels, blockades, etc.)
  • Jefferson declared an embargo (ban on exporting
to foreign nations) to help keep America out of
    the conflict
  • Ends up hurting the USA more than helping!
