Early Explorers

• Portuguese were the 1st to start exploration
• Used caravels--a quick, highly maneuverable ship
  with both triangular and square shaped sails
• Square sails carried ship forward
• Triangular sails allowed ships to sail in the wind

• B. 1451 d. May 20, 1506
• Was an Italian who sailed for Portugal
• Hmmmmmm
• Not the 1st European to reach the New
  World---but given credit for it
• Hmmmmmm
• His voyages led to European awareness of the New
  World--led to European colonialization

• Made three trips to the new world
• Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria
• 1st Voyage--1492
• Made a ton of mistakes---hmmmmm
• Thought Asia was larger then it really was
• Thought the world was smaller than it really was
• Did not know about North America

• 1st Voyage
• Denied by the king of Portugal--advisors told
  king not a good investment
• Approached King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of
  Spain for funds
• Promised them riches beyond their belief
• Promised them he would spread Christianity
• They agreed and funded him

1st Voyage

• Reached the Caribbean islands--he called them San
  Salvador and Hispanola
• Thought he was in the West Indies--called the
  natives Indians where we get the name Indians
• Encountered a group called the Taino
• Pre-Columbus 5 groups over 10,000 people
• By 18th century population decimated by disease,
  slavery, and assimilation
• Spanish forced them to work on plantations

• What did Columbus find?
• Little gold
• Fertile Land
• Cotton
• Variety of new fruits and veggies
• Slaves

• Made two more voyages
• Introduced horses to the New World
• Brought tobacco back to Spain
• Overall not what he promised the king and queen
• When returned to Spain placed in shackles and
  sent to jail
• King and queen eventually forgave him
• Died a relatively wealthy man

• a lack of culture, customs, and religion
• And there I found very many islands filled with
  people innumerable, and of them all I have taken
  possession for their Highnesses.
• Weapons they have none, nor are acquainted with
  them, for I showed them swords which they
  grasped by the blades, and cut themselves through
  ignorance.
• They have no iron, their javelins being without
  it, and nothing more than sticks

• They have no religion, and I believe that they
  would very readily become Christians
