International and Regional Organizations
  • 1945 51 nations signed the United Nations
    charter to preserve world peace and to solve
    social/economic problems
  • The modern UN has close to 190 nations that all
    recognize global interdependence
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) tries to wipe
    out diseases
  • Other agencies include the International Monetary
    Fund and Food and Agriculture Organization
  • Besides international agencies there are regional
    groups such as the Organization of American
    States (OAS) and the African Union
  • The Grameen Bank, created by Dr. Yunus is a
    private organization that gives loans to poor
    individuals especially female entrepreneurs

Issues of Global Concern
  • Refugees
  • Thousands of people flee poor nations to
    industrial nations to escape poverty, war, or
    harsh governments. Most refugees live in
    temporary camps set up by the United nations.
  • Drug Trade
  • Many farmers can raise more money by raising drug
    plants instead of food
  • Latin American countries cooperate with the US to
    stop drug trading

  • Combating terrorism has become a world wide
    effort
  • The environment
  • Protecting rainforests and making oil tankers
    safer

  • They are making an effort to form a stable economy

    of Rights
  • Freedom of speech, press, and religion
  • Right to a fair trial
  • Technology and the future
  • Global links through technology such as the
    internet and satellites are making science more
    efficient to battle disease and natural disasters
