Title: Circulatory System:

1
Circulatory System
2
Function
  • TRANSPORT SYSTEM
  • To deliver oxygen and food
  • Collects waste products for removal
  • Helps defend the body against infection
  • Filters dead blood cells from body

3
Major Parts Minor Parts
  • Heart
  • Blood
  • Vessels
  • Arteries
  • Veins
  • Capillaries
  • Lungs
  • Spleen
  • Liver
  • Kidneys
  • Bone Marrow
  • Brain

4
Heart
  • General Info
  • Size of fist
  • 50 muscle tissue
  • Protected by ribcage
  • Pumps 70 times per minute when at rest
  • Pumps 70ml per beat
  • 4 stages to a heartbeat
  • 4 chambers to a heart (2 halves / by septum)
  • One way valves (bicuspid or tricuspid)
  • Natural pacemaker to make muscle contract
  • Made of cardiac muscle

5
Parts of the Heart
1. Aorta 2. From the body 5. Right atrium 6. One
way valve-bicuspid 7. Right ventricle 9. From
the lungs 11. Left Atrium 12. One Way Valve-
Tricuspid 14. Left ventricle
6
Sequence of a Heartbeat
  • Blood is coming from the body and carrying carbon
    dioxide.
  • This blood enters the right atria.
  • One-way valve in the bottom of the right atrium
    opens.
  • The one-way valves close.
  • The blood moves from the right atrium moves into
    the right ventricle.
  • The right ventricle pumps the blood to the
    pulmonary artery.
  • This artery carries the carbon dioxide-rich blood
    to the two lungs.
  • Blood travels to the lungs where gas exchange
    takes place.
  • Blood returns from the lungs and is rich with
    oxygen.
  • This blood enters the left atria.
  • One-way valve in the bottom of the left atrium
    opens.
  • One-way valve closes.
  • Blood is trapped in the left ventricle.
  • The left ventricle pumps blood into the aorta.
  • This is the largest artery in the body and
carries the blood to the body.

7
Blood Vessels
  • Arteries- large blood vessels that carry blood
    away from the heart
  • Flexible for the pumping
  • Aorta is largest artery
  • Veins- vessels that return blood to the heart
  • Contain one-way valves
  • Capillaries- smallest vessels where gas exchange
    occurs

8
Blood Pressure
  • Systolic- 1st number
  • During heart contraction
  • Diastolic- 2nd number
  • During hearts rest/refill
  • Number that they watch for HBP

9
Blood
  • White blood cells-
  • Larger
  • Main defense against germs
  • Multiple types
  • Red Blood Cells
  • Very small
  • Carries oxygen via hemoglobin
  • Created filtered via spleen, bone marrow,
    liver
  • Plasma - mostly water (90)
  • Nutrients
  • Hormones
  • Minerals
  • Platelets - allow for clotting

10
Healthy Circulatory System
  • Low fat diet
  • Avoid being overweight
  • Exercise to strengthen heart
