• 1. The US had long been expanding, especially on
  the frontier.
• 2. In the 1870s, the US frontier was closing,
  and we began to look elsewhere for expansion.
• a. Jealous of European possessions in Africa
  and Asia.

• a. Alaska, 1867
• 1. Purchased by Sect. of State William
  Seward for 7.2 Million from Russia.
• 2. Known as Sewards Folly, based on
  public perception that Alaska was useless!

  Hawaiians were reduced to just 40,000!!!

  Kalakaua, wanted to form their own nation.
• a. However, sugar plantation owners,
  especially Sanford Dole, forced him to sign a
  constitution that deprived Hawaiians of most
  rights and freedoms!

• 5. Annexation occurred later, in 1898, when
  the Hawaiian queen Liliuokalani was overthrown
  by US Congress!
• 6. 1959- Became our 50th state!
