What is a pesticide?

• Defined by EPA as any substance or mixture of
  substances intended for preventing, destroying,
  repelling, or mitigating any pest
• Also includes substances intended for use as a
  plant regulator, defoliant or desiccant.

Pesticide Registration

• Requires submission of complete formula, proposed
  label, and full description of tests and results
• EPA must grant approval of registration if
• Its composition warrants its proposed claim
• Its labeling complies with requirements
• It performs intended function w/o unreasonable
  adverse effects on the environment
• When used properly, it will not cause
  unreasonable adverse effect on the environment
• Review of registration every 15 years

Conditional Registration

• Pesticides identical or very similar to currently
  registered products
• New uses to existing pesticide registrations
• Pesticides containing active ingredients not
  contained in any currently registered pesticide
  for which data need be obtained for registration
