What is a pesticide?
  • Defined by EPA as any substance or mixture of
    substances intended for preventing, destroying,
    repelling, or mitigating any pest
  • Also includes substances intended for use as a
    plant regulator, defoliant or desiccant.

  • Requires submission of complete formula, proposed
    label, and full description of tests and results
  • EPA must grant approval of registration if
  • Its composition warrants its proposed claim
  • Its labeling complies with requirements
  • It performs intended function w/o unreasonable
    adverse effects on the environment

    unreasonable adverse effect on the environment
  • Review of registration every 15 years
