Introduction
Hi my name is Livy and I am doing my project on
Hybrid autos. I will persuade you to buy a hybrid
auto. Check out this presentation to find out
more about them.
3What's a Hybrid?
What's a Hybrid?
A Hybrid is a car that uses electric with a gas
assist engine.

7Why Choose a Hybrid
My main questions is Why Choose a
Hybrid? And now I am going to answer that. Today
in reality, only 5 percent of SUVs are ever taken
off-road and the vast majority of these vehicles
are used for everyday driving. In 1985, SUVs
accounted for only 2 percent of new vehicle
sales. SUVs now account for one in four new
vehicles sold, and sales continue to climb. If
all SUV drivers drove their SUVs off-road then
that would be a different story. Today on the
road almost everywhere you look you can an
SUV.
Why Choose a Hybrid?
8Why Choose a Hybrid
Why Choose a Hybrid?
Hybrids use a source of gasoline and electricity.
Hybrids in general are much better cars for the
environment, but the Honda Insight is the
greenest car now available. It has 2 seats. It
also has a 4 star rating for front and side
impact. Honda lightweight aluminum structure
and very streamlined body reduces the overall
power for moving the car. Toyota Prius ends up
third in the gas mileage at 45 mpg city and 52
mpg highway.
9How the hybrid works
How the Hybrid works
This is about how the electric part of the hybrid
works. Say you are coming down a hill fast
toward a stop sign and you need to brake. You
slowly step on the brake. The friction from the
braking action is turned into electricity by a
generator which charges the batteries. This
electricity is stored by the batteries for later
use.
10Why Are Hybrids Better For The Environment?
Why Are Hybrids Better For The Environment?
Hybrids are better for the environment in many
ways. One is that when a Hybrid is idling the gas
shuts off. Also when the car is in motion and not
needing the gas the gas shuts off e.g., the car
is coasting down a hill.
11How The Hybrid Vehicle Saves Energy
How The Hybrid Vehicle Saves Energy
How The Hybrid Vehicle Saves Energy Ways the
Honda Insight engine is more efficient than
current model vehicles 1. compact 1.0 liter
engine 2. variable valve control ( it only takes
in gas that it uses,
decreasing waste) 3. lean combustion
(reduced waste) 4. advanced techniques for
cutting friction 5. recovers braking energy
(friction) and stores it electrically 6. engine
turns off when the car is stopped but restarts
quickly as soon as power is needed 7. the motor
acts like a generator to convert captured energy
into electricity
12Hybrid Components
Hybrid Components
Hybrid Components Hybrid cars contain the
following parts Gasoline engine - The hybrid
car has a much like the one you will find on most
cars. However, the engine on a hybrid is smaller
and uses advanced technologies to reduce
emissions and increase efficiency. Fuel tank -
The in a hybrid is the energy storage device for
the gasoline engine. Gasoline has a much higher
energy density than batteries do. For example, it
takes about 1,000 pounds of batteries to store as
much energy as 1 gallon (7 pounds) of gasoline.
Electric motor - The on a hybrid car is very
sophisticated. Advanced electronics allow it to
act as a motor as well as a generator. For
example, when it needs to, it can draw energy
from the batteries to accelerate the car. But
acting as a generator, it can slow the car down
and return energy to the batteries. Generator -
The is similar to an electric motor, but it acts
only to produce electrical power. It is used
mostly on series hybrids.
13Hybrid Components
Hybrid Components Hybrid cars contain the
following parts Batteries - The Batteries in a
hybrid car are the energy storage device for the
electric motor. Unlike the gasoline in the fuel
tank, which can only power the gasoline engine,
the electric motor on a hybrid car can put energy
into the batteries as well as draw energy from
them. Transmission - The transmission on a
hybrid car performs the same basic function as
the transmission on a conventional car. Some
hybrids, like the Honda Insight, have
conventional transmissions. Others, like the
Toyota Prius, have radically different ones.

Gas Mileage Gasoline-electric hybrids have a
gasoline engine as their main power source but
also use an electric motor for additional power
when needed. Hybrids can capture the energy
normally lost during braking and store it as
electricity in a special battery. Unlike
all-electric vehicles, hybrids run on regular
unleaded gasoline and never need to be "plugged
in" to an electrical outlet. What's more, hybrids
don't waste energy idling. The gasoline engine
shuts off when the car comes to a stop (e.g. at a
red light), to be started instantly by the
electric motor when needed again.
15Hybrid Diagram
Hybrid Diagram
Under the Hood It's no accident that the two
highest fuel economy vehicles for 2002 are hybrid
vehicles. Hybrid electric vehicles combine the
best features of internal combustion engines (1)
and electric motors (3). In the Honda Insight
and Toyota Prius both the engine (1) and the
electric motor (3) are connected to the wheels by
the same transmission (2). With the assistance of
the electric motor the engine can be smaller.
Intelligent power electronics (4) decide when
to use the motor and engine and when to store
electricity in advanced batteries (6) for future
use. The electric motor is used primarily for low
speed cruising or to provide extra power for
acceleration or hill climbing. When braking or
coasting to a stop, the hybrid uses its electric
motor (3) as a generator to produce electricity,
which is then stored in its battery pack
(6). Unlike all-electric vehicles, hybrid
vehicles do not need to be plugged into an
external source of electricity. Gasoline stored
in a conventional fuel tank (5) provides all the
energy the hybrid vehicle needs.

18Safety
The Civic hybrid is a very safe car. It has
front and side airbags. It also has an anti-lock
braking system, which means during a collision,
if you brake hard, rather than having your brakes
lock up, it will help you stop safely. All five
seats in the Civic hybrid come with 3-point seat
belts. The front belts have adjustable anchors
for better comfort and in a collision, the belts
tighten to hold you secure.

19Toyota Motor Corp
Toyota Motor Corp., the world's third-largest
automaker, plans to use gasoline-electric hybrid
engines in all vehicles by 2012 to increase fuel
efficiency and reduce tailpipe emissions, an
executive said. The gasoline-electric system
emits as much as 40 percent less carbon dioxide
than traditional internal-combustion engines,
said Masatami Takimoto, managing director for
engine engineering, in an interview at a Detroit
conference. Toyota was the first to sell a
hybrid, with the Prius car in 1997. The company
sold 5.9 million cars and trucks last year,
including 36,928 hybrids.

21Facts
Facts
-A Hybrid car gives you 20 or 30 more miles then
a standard automobile -Put your foot on the
brake to start it. -One of the drawbacks to an
all-electric car is they can only go 50-100 miles
(80-161 km) before charging. Ex from Ashland to
Portland you would have to stop roughly 5 times
to recharge for hours.
22Comparing
Let's compare a car like the Chevy Camaro,
with its big V-8 engine, to our hybrid car with
its small gas engine and electric motor. The
engine in the Camaro has more than enough power
to handle any driving situation. The engine in
the hybrid car is powerful enough to move the car
along on the freeway, but when it needs to get
the car moving in a hurry, or go up a steep hill,
it needs help. That "help" comes from the
electric motor and battery -- this system steps
in to provide the necessary extra power
