What is the internet?
  • The Internet is a community on the computer. We
call this a Cyber-community. There are many
places to visit in this cyber-community.
  • The places we visit in the Cyber-community are
    called Websites.
  • People who use the Internet are called
    Cyber-citizens.

We Have Responsibilities
When Traveling the Informational Highway
(3-5)
10
At Home Safety First
  • Remember never give your name or address or
telephone number to strangers you may be talking
to online. It would be a good idea to ask your
    parents first.
  • Important Fact! People that you meet online may
not be who they say they are!
  • Surf the web with your parents present. If they
can not be there make them aware of the sites
that you intend to visit and stay there!

11
Being Careful is Being Safe
  • There are rules in the classroom that your
teachers expect you to follow, there are rules in
your computer lab and at home as well.
  • To be a Safe Cyber Surfer You must act
responsibly, you must listen and follow
    directions.
  • Go only to the websites that your teacher
instructs you to go to. Ignore those pesky
pop-ups! X them out immediately! You have not
won anything, people at those sites want you to
go to their site so they can sell something.

12
Be a Cyber Superhero!
  • Never plan to meet someone whom youve met in a
chat room on the internet. You may be asking for
    more than you bargained for.
  • If you know of a friend who is planning to do
this, tell an adult immediately, you may be
    saving a life!

13
Beware of the Cyber Bully!
  • One way to prevent bullying is not to give out
your school user password, not even to your best
friend. Remember everyone has a right to
    privacy.
  • Some students use technology as a means of
bullying other people by posting pictures or
statements on websites that may be upsetting to
    the student they have targeted.

14
Prevent Bullying
  • If you do view a website that has information
about you and you choose not to have it there,
your parents can ask to see this information and
they can request that particular website to have
that information or picture removed, although
    that will not happen immediately.
  • Keep your information to yourself!

15
Stay in Controll
  • If you are surfing the net at school or at home
and you see something that makes you feel
uncomfortable for any reason, tell an adult
    immediately!
  • Chances are very good that if the subject matter
is questionable and may not be appropriate for
    your age group.
  • Parents and teachers will be able to have those
sites blocked by their internet providers.

16
Internet Safty for Children
  • Many people such as law enforcement, our
government, teachers as well as parents are
concerned about child safety on the internet.
  • They have become aware that using a computer at
home is not necessarily as safe as it sounds.
  • Going on line means children can search just
about anything they wish and they can go into
chat rooms and talk to people all over the world.
Those people, however, may not have the best
    intentions!

17
  • One of the websites our school employs at the
elementary level is I-SAFE. Org. They supply
teachers with the educational tools they need to
carry back into the classroom and incorporate
    into their lesson plans.
  • This can be done with I-Buddy, a cartoon for
children as young as the Kindergarten through 2nd
    grades.
  • I-SAFE America is dedicated to the awareness of
internet safety and keeping students surfing in
the right direction so that their experiences on
the net are beneficial and become healthy
    learning experiences.

18
Surfing the Internet can be Fun if you use Common
Sense!
  • Never give out personal information without
    parents permission.
  • Ignore the pop-ups they just want to sell
    something.
  • Always tell an adult where you want to be on the
    internet
  • If something makes you feel uncomfortable, tell
    an adult immediately
  • Never ever go to meet someone you have met in an
    internet chat room.
