Chapter 3, Section 1
  • Pages 86-95

  • Red font Notes section

2
  • CPS Time!!

3
  • Motion an object is in motion when its distance
    from another object is changing.

4
  • Reference Point a place or object used for
comparison to determine if something is moving.
  • An object is in motion if it changes relative to
    a reference point.

5
Reference Point
  • Example You are walking down the hall.you are
getting closer to the wall at the end.
  • The reference point is the wall at the end.

6
  • CPS Time!!

7
Reference Point
8
  • CPS Time!!

9
  • Meter basic SI unit of length. (m)
  • A little longer than a yard.
  • Smaller centimeter (cm), millimeter (mm)

10
Calculating Speed
  • Speed Def. How fast an object moves over a given
    time.
  • Speed is a rate.

11
To calculate or formula for speed
speed distance time
or
speed distance time
12
  • Speed is measured in (m/sec)
  • You need the two units. (distance/time)

13
  • CPS Time!!

14
Constant Speed
  • Constant Speed speed is the same for an
    extended period of time
  • Example Driving on a long trip on cruise control
same speed for a long time.there is no
    variation.

15
  • CPS Time!!

16
Average Speed
  • Average Speed a speed that fluctuates (changes)
    throughout the course of time.
  • Example distance between one class and another
fast, stop by locker, start back up, talk to
friends, rush off to class. There is no constant
    speed present

17
How do we measure Motion?
By measuring its two parts Speed and
Direction!
18
Velocity
  • Velocity speed in a given direction.
  • You must know the speed and direction of an
    objects motion to know velocity

19
  • CPS Time!!

20
Velocity
  • Ex Weather forecaster tells you Hurricane
Wildcat is is moving 25 km/hr Eastward.
  • Without the Eastward (direction)they are just
giving you the speed.the direction speed gives
    you the velocity

21
We call speed and direction together Velocity.
Velocity is the standard unit of measure for
motion.
22
If a car drives West for 2 hours and goes 80
miles, the velocity is
40 miles per hour West!
