Hantavirus

• Hantavirus is a negative-stranded RNA virus that
  belong to the Bunyaviridae family.
• In Europe and Asia Hantavirus generally causes
  Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome.
• In the US it causes Hantavirus Pulmonary
  Syndrome.
• HPS affects the lungs and usually results in
  acute respiratory failure

Outbreak!
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome was first
discovered in 1993. The first states to fall
victim were
Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah
The virus is found in urine, droppings, and
saliva. People become infected when these
particles are stirred up in the air and inhaled.
The Culprit of spreading the virus in the US??
Rodents!!!

In Depth

• First found in the Four Corners, now in over ½
  of US states.
• Main carriers deer mice, cotton rats,
  white-footed mice, other small mammals
• Other forms of HPS found are Bayou virus and the
  Black Virus

Symptoms

• Fever
• Muscle Aches
• Chills
• Nausea/vomiting/diarrhea
• Dry cough

• Keep lid on garbage, throw out uneaten pet food
• Cover holes in house, clear brush away from base
  of homes
• Never mess with rodents while camping (duh)
• Use caution when cleaning cabins/barns that have
  been closed for winter
