Early Career

• Organized civil rights activities in the South
  and then nationwide
• Was arrested several times in the 1950s and 1960s

• Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1964
• Spoke out against the Vietnam War and poverty

March on Washington

• 200,000 people attended
• The march was held in August 1963
• MLK was an organizer of the march
• He gave his famous I have a Dream speech at the
  march

Assassination

• MLK went to Memphis, Tennessee, to support
  striking sanitation workers
• On April 4, 1968, MLK was shot and killed while
  standing on the balcony of his motel room
• This motel is now a civil rights museum
