Ralph Abernathy
  • Ralph Abernathy was an American minister, a civil
    rights leader, and an aid to Dr. Martin Luther
    King.
  • He had an impact on black history because he was
    one of the civil rights leaders and secretary to
    the C.S.C.

Benjamin Banneker
  • Benjamin Banneker was a man who wrote books.
  • He loved the way of writing. He lived on a farm.
  • Benjamin Banneker had an enormous impact on Black
    History because he proved that black writers are
    just as good as white writers.

Shirley Chisholm
  • Shirley Chisholm was the first African American
    women to serve in the United States Congress.
  • She was also a consultant for the citys Bureau
    of Child Welfare in New York City.

Frederick Douglass
  • Frederick Douglass was the first black citizen to
    hold high rank in the U.S. government.
  • He was also the first black American who was one
    of the most eminent human-rights leader of the
    19th century.

Duke Ellington
  • Duke Ellington was a famous jazz musician.
  • He was a pianist, composer, and bandleader.
  • He was a discoverer of big band jazz-he was
    devoted to jazz since he was 18.
  • Many African-Americans took after him to create
    jazz. Soon, later, big band jazz led to the swing
    era.
  • He was a very important person in jazz history.

  • She was born in 1942.
  • She sang the blues, jazz, and gospel.
  • At the age of 12 she made her first record.
  • She was the best singer of her time.
  • She also has won 15 Grammy's.

  • George Washington Carver became a consultant in
    agricultural research for the U.S.department of
    agriculture.
  • He invented peanut butter and was good in the
    peanut industry.

  • He was an American blues electric guitar player.
  • He was a symbol of the 1960s youth
    counterculture.
  • He was a good guitar player.

Ida Bell Wells-Barnett
  • She became a teacher. She did not give up her
    seat for the colored section.
  • She led a national campaign against lynching.
  • She marched in suffrage parades in Washington
    D.C. and Chicago.

    Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer.
  • Joplin also wrote two operas they were
    Treemonisha and A Guest of Honor.

  • He formed the Southern Christian Leadership
    Conference.
  • He lead the Southern Blacks in nonviolent protest
    against segregation in the South.

  • Lewis Latimer was a very good inventor.
  • He even drafted the patent drawings for the
    telephone made by Alexander Graham Bell.
  • His was the original draft for Thomas Edison.

  • Muhammad Ali was a famous black boxer.
  • He also had a record of 61 fights won 56, 37 by
    KO and lost 5, 1 by KO.
  • He also stood up for his religious beliefs
    because he was going to go to war.

Herbie Nichols
He composed about 170 songs and made 4 albums
from 1955-1957. He was in the army from
1941-1943. He made many songs for dramas and put
humor into his work.

Kid Ory
  • He was born in 1886 on Christmas Day. As a child,
    he played homemade instruments, so it was easy to
    see that he had a desire for music.
  • He was the most famous trombonist in the early
    years of jazz. From 1912-1919 he led one of the
    best bands in New Orleans.

Floyd Patterson
  • Floyd Patterson was a professional boxer.
  • He was the Olympic middleweight champion in 1952.
  • He was the world heavyweight champion in
    1956-59-60-62.
  • He claimed the New York Golden Gloves title in
    both 1951 and 1952.
  • He was the youngest champion in history.
  • He retired in 1972 at age 37.

  • Quincy Jones was a a great African American
    composer.
  • He was a major Supporter of the Martin Luther
    King operation Breadbasket. He also played his
    music for the march of Civil Rights.

Rosa Parks
  • Rosa Parks was famous because she was one of the
    leaders in the bus boycott.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. helped her also. She was
    arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the
    bus.

Segregation
  • Segregation happened in the 1920s and ended in
    the 1960s.
  • Segregation separated white and black people.
  • Segregation happened at schools, parks, jobs and
    even whole states!

  • Wrote the poem Bars Fight in 1746.
  • Married a free black, Abijah Prince.
  • Handled a case against false land claims of
    Colonel Eli Bronson.

Underground Railroad
  • The Underground Railroad was a route for blacks
    to follow to escape slavery in the south.
  • Harriet Tubman made 15 trips to the Underground
    Railroad to free blacks.
  • Southerners were paid to catch escaped slaves
    using the Underground Railroad.
  • The Underground Railroad eventually led the Civil
    War.

James Van Der Zee
  • Was an African-American photographer in the
    1920s and 30s
  • His pictures chronicled the Harlem Renaissance.
  • His pictures also showed middle class black life
    at the time, a side of life rarely seen at the
    time.

Phillis Wheatley
  • Phillis Wheatley was a slave who was treated very
    well and even schooled by her owner John
    Wheatley of whom she got her last name.
  • Wheatley was the First Black Woman Poet in the
    U.S. Her poems were praised by George Washington.

Malcolm X
  • He spoke in 1965 about peace and freedom saying
    You cant separate peace from freedom because no
    one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.
  • He also said, Dr. King wants the same thing as I
    want. Freedom.

Andrew Jackson Young
  • Andrew Jackson Young Jr. was an American Civil
    Rights Leader.
  • He changed Black History because he became active
    in the Civil-Rights movement and gave the rights
    for blacks to vote. In 1981 Andrew Jackson Young
    was elected Mayor.

Zora Neale Hurston
  • She was born on January 7, 1891 and died January
    28,1960.
  • She was a novelist, a folkorist, and an
    anthropologist.
  • She wrote eleven books and her most famous was
    Their Eyes Were Watching God
  • Although she was criticized by blacks because
    they thought her writing was offensive, she
    later published four novels.
  • She currently has a new book called Wrapped In
    Rainbows The life of Zora Neale Hurston. The
    book is made by Valerie Boyd
