  • Explain the three categories of rights contained
    in the Bill of Rights.
  • Discuss the needs for limits on rights in our
    democratic society.
  • Describe how the Civil Rights Movement of the
    1960s resulted in broadening our rights as
    Americans.

The Rights of Citizens
  • Three Sources of our rights
  • 1. The Declaration of Independence
    Constitution.
  • 2. Laws enacted by Congress state legislatures.
  • 3. Interpretation of the laws by the courts.

  • A.) Security means protection from unfair and
    unreasonable actions by the government. The
    principle of due process of law protects our
    rights.
  • B.) Equality everyone is entitled to the equal
    protection of all the laws in the United States.

    our fundamental freedoms. Such as the first
    amendment rights and Bill of Rights.

  • A.) Limits on Rights Our rights are not
    unlimited. The government can establish laws that
    restrict individual freedoms to protect the
    community.

  • The civil rights movement resulted in the passage
    of several new federal and state laws that
    increased rights of all citizens.

  • B.) The Civil Rights Act This act gave African
    Americans equal protection under the law.
  • C.) The Voting Rights Act Empowered federal
