Title: Irish Immigration

1
Irish Immigration
  • What problems did the Irish face when they came
    to America?

2
Problems
  • When Irish immigrants came to America they faced
many problems, problems already started on the
boat ride to America, because many people died.
Those people were thrown overboard. The Irish
came to America for freedom, but there were many
different religions, which led to conflict.
  • When the Irish go to America they had to go
through medical examinations. If they did not
pass they would be sent back to Ireland. In
addition to the medical exams, they were asked a
few questions. For example if they could read and
write, or how much money they had.

3
Problems Cont.
  • People stayed in the seaports for two main
reasons. One reason is because they had little
money. Another reason is because they did not
trust the farming after the potato famine in
    Ireland.
  • The living condition were very difficult. A
whole family lived in just one room. Also there
were many bad diseases such as Pneumonia,
Cholera, and Tuberculosis. One thing that carried
and spread the diseases was rats. The diseases
    mostly effected children.

4
Problems Cont.
  • Unemployment was another big problem for the
Irish immigrants. There were not enough jobs for
so many new people. Men were mostly hired for
dangerous jobs and women were mostly hires as
servants. They were both paid very small amounts.
  • The Americans treated the Irish very badly.
They called them dirty stupid, and lazy.
The Americans also blamed the Irish for taking
money out of their paychecks. Even though the
were many problems, many Irish people survived.
