Title: Debate over the League of Nations
1Debate over the League of Nations
2The Big Four
3Woodrow Wilson
We entered this war because violations of right
had occurred which touched us to the quick and
made the life of our own people impossible unless
they were corrected and the world secure once for
all against their recurrence.
4Henry Cabot Lodge
Deeply suspicious of any attempt to unnecessarily
involve the U.S. in international political
matters Cabot Lodge campaigned ceaselessly
against U.S. participation in the League. Cabot
Lodge's viewpoint eventually prevailed over that
of the increasingly frail president and the U.S.
never joined the League.
5Philander Chase Knox
With the signing of the armistice ,Knox who was
quite without feeling during the stress and storm
of the war, but with the situation created by the
presentation of the Treaty of Versailles with its
interwoven League of Nations stirred his
intellectual interest. He became the leader of
the little band of "irreconcilables" who girded
their armor to prevent what they regarded as a
catastrophic sacrifice of American interests.
