• Daniel Boone
• Best known early pioneer
• Remembered for leading many pioneers through the
  Appalachian Mtns.
• Created the Wilderness Road from Virginia to
  Kentucky through the Appalachian Mtns. Following
  the Cumberland Gap
• Eventually reached the Missouri River and
  Mississippi Rivers

The Cumberland Gap was a trail that followed a
small valley through the Appalachian Mtns. Made
the journey easier.

• New Orleans was a critical port for American
  settlers west of the Appalachian Mountains
• Jefferson sent James Madison to France to buy New
  Orleans from France
• Monroe offered 2 Million France countered with
  15 Million for all of Louisiana
• 828,000 acres
