Grade Level 7-8 Graders
Jenna Rhatigan
2 Lesson Objective(s) By participating in a
simulation of a bullfight, held in Spain,
students will gain an understanding of what a
real bullfight consists of.
3Lesson Objective(s) The students receive a full
insight on how risky and dangerous this form of
entertainment really is. Throughout this process
they will be using specific websites I have
pre-approved to get a clear understanding on what
a bullfight consists of.
4Lesson Objective(s)
- The students will also be able to
- identify each person involved in
- a bullfight.
5Introduce the Learning Activity
- I will begin the class by simply asking the
students What is a bullfight? I will then pass
out a worksheet to the class listing bullfight
vocabulary. There will be words provided in
English and Spanish.
6Provide Information For this lesson I will
provide a definition worksheet that includes any
information the students will need for basic
knowledge of this topic.
7Provide InformationI will also give a list of
websites I feel are necessary in showing the
students how a bullfight is conducted and by
accessing these websites the students will be
able to give a step by step outline of the many
steps and procedures of a bullfight.

8Provide Information
- They will be able to clearly read about each
- person involved in a fight as well as there
- specific role. After they get a more detailed
- idea of how the fight is conducted, they will
- be asked to follow along with the worksheet
- they were handed out in the beginning while
- I read the steps listed.
9Provide Information Each matador and his team
walk out together in a procession across the
arena. The first bull is engaged by the first
bullfighter's assistants, with large purple
capes, to see how it moves in the bullring.
10- Provide Information
- The judge signals the entry of one or two
picadores, one of whom is to pierce the bull's
neck in a limited way. The aim is to plunge their
lances into the bull's neck, thus weakening its
strong neck muscles.
11Provide Information
- The first of three banderilleros
- (usually older bullfighters who form part of the
matador's team) - individually run towards the bull,
- making him charge. Their job is to insert two
- banderillas (decorated wooden sticks with spiked
ends) over the horns into the bull's neck muscle.
12Provide Information
- The matador engages the bull with his
- cape in a series of passes. When the
- bull is weak and unable to charge
- much longer, he pulls out a curved sword, with
which he kills the bull by inserting the sword
between the cervical vertebra and into the bulls
heart.
13Provide Information
- Then I will show the following clip

14Provide Practice
- The students will have an opportunity to
- practice this task because over a two
- week period. The students will stand in
- front of the class in there group and
- conduct a bullfight with any props they
- may need and also they will describe to
- the class who they are and what there
- role is in the bullfight at all times.
15Provide Practice
- Finally after the approval of the school,
parents and students, I will use a video camera
to tape each group as they do there skit and they
we will enjoy watching them as a class.
16- Provide Knowledge of Results
- Prior to the students getting on camera I will
monitor there skits throughout the time I give
them to practice to make sure they have
everything clear about the correct steps of the
bullfight.
17Provide Knowledge of Results In order to
critique each student individually I will pull
them aside and ask them which website they used
in order to learn there role and if they enjoyed
working with that specific website. To provide
written feedback I will have each student hand in
a daily log of what they have been practicing and
there feelings on how it is coming along and the
things that need improvement.
18- Review the Activity
- The students will review the activity daily by
practicing there skits and using the websites to
acquire any information they are lacking. There
daily log will also inform me whether or not
anyone is behind.
19Review the Activity
- About twenty minutes prior to the end of every
class I will have each student get into a group
they havent worked with keeping there same role
just working with different people to insure that
there knowledge is accurate even when they arent
working within their comfort zone.
20- Method of Assessment
- In order to assess that the students have
acquired the proper knowledge about the Spanish
culture, specifically keying in on the spectator
sport of bullfighting, they will be graded
partially on there video which they should be
able to identify the people involved in a
bullfight.
21Method of Assessment
- Also on a short composition regarding their
feelings of the sport of bullfighting now that
they know the inside story because most of which
we will be covering goes unsaid. They will be
asked to include whether they think if this
sport should be abolished or if it is simply a
part of there culture.
