Support for planning the sound garden provided by
NIAS (Northamptonshire Inspection and Advisory
Service) Funding for the sound project provided
by Arts Council UK (East Midlands) Staff met with
the musician to think about ways in which the
sound garden might be utilised. Musician David
Wheway Head of Nursery Hazel Kitson
3The musician and the head of nursery planned the
garden.Staff, parents, older brothers and
sisters and staff family members worked together
to create the garden.

7Technical data Wood from local DIY. Different
lengths give different pitches. Saw cuts
underneath bars give more-accurate
tuning. Washers underneath bars and in
counter-sink holes allow vibration.
Building the giant xylophone

Technical data Pots attached by wooden discs
and screws through drainage hole onto wooden
stakes set in ground.

Heads husband.
10The children explore the sound garden
Technical data Wind-chimes etc. donated by
families. Feather duster beaters.
11Technical data Different pipe lengths for
different pitches. Set in box and secured with
cavity wall filler. Flip-flop beaters.
12Recording sounds using a mini-disk recorder
Technical data Mini-disc recorder 70-CD
Quality record and playback. Linked to then
recorded on computer.
13Children listen to the water feature at a
distance through pipes of different lengths.
