Promoting Reading
  • National Year of reading will help us to promote
    reading even more.
  • Encourage children to
  • To read extensively and discuss personal reading
    with others (Target for Upper Juniors)
  • Read regularly
  • Visit the local library-take part in activities
    provided
  • Children select books to read

What can I do at home?
  • Children should be reading independently, but
    is still nice for them to listen to others
    reading e.g. audio tapes, bedtime stories.
  • Children to read a page or two aloud to an adult
  • Discuss texts with children
  • Ask Choose 5 words to describe the main
    character.
  • Why did you choose those words? Evidence from
    story.
  • Encourage them to complete reading log.
  • Encourage them to make a note of new words they
    have met
  • using a dictionary to find the meanings.

  • Allow children to make own choices.
  • Magazines, newspapers, comics, internet
  • Turn the sound off on the TV and put the
    subtitles on!
  • Keep an eye out for things that will catch your
    childs imagination
  • Read yourself set a good example by reading for
    pleasure and talking about it.
  • Make sure children see male and female
    role-models.
  • Be patient but persistent if you have a reluctant
    reader!

Writing and Spelling
  • Texts children read provide a range of
  • vocabulary and ideas for their own writing.
  • Children are encouraged to use books they have
    read as models for their own writing.
  • Reading a range of non-fiction and fiction
    talking about how the authors use words to shape
    their ideas metaphors, similes, adverbs.
  • TALK, TALK, TALK!
  • Talk to your child about what they liked about
    the authors style. Was it the adjectives they
    used or the way they included suspense?
  • How will their writing help you with yours?

Ideas for writing and spelling
  • Older children can develop writing and social
    skills by finding pen-friends through school
    clubs or keeping in touch with friends met on
    holiday.
  • As well as going through spelling lists, play
    games like anagrams- rearrange names , book
    titles to make new words
