  • Expedition of exploration of Louisiana Territory
    and the western territories.
  • President Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis,
    his private secretary, and William Clark, whom
    together, had an excellent combination of useful
    characteristics to aid the expedition.
  • The purpose of the expedition was to
    scientifically map out the area and record all
    credible scientific discoveries, as well as
    establish official relations with the Indians.

17
  • They started their expedition from St. Louis, and
    traveled west on the Missouri River, and then
    straight to the west coast.
  • Lasted from 1804-1805.
  • Upon return, greeted very delightfully by the
    public and government.
  • Other expeditions followed, but none were
    completed with the success of that of Lewis and
    Clark.
