10Decisions of RI Board -1
- At its November 1999 meeting, the RI Board of
Directors recognized the importance of providing
Rotary Clubs with the information they need to be
effective in languages that they can read and
understand. At this same time, a list of
essential publications was established. - At its February 2000 meeting, the Board agreed
that a district or group of districts in which
the Rotarians speak a language other than
English, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, French,
German, Korean, Italian and Swedish may, on a
voluntary basis translate, print and distribute
essential club information to the clubs in their
district (s). - November 2000 It further approved a plan for a
pilot project for translation of publications by
volunteers. Initially districts in Finland, The
Netherlands, Taiwan and Thailand were selected to
participate in this project.

- Other interested districts are considered to
participate. - On behalf of the RI Board of Directors, district
2450 was invited to participate in this project. - Participation includes the appointment of a
committee or group to be responsible for
translating, printing and distributing
publications to clubs in the country. RI will
reimburse governors of participating districts
for the costs of printing and distributing these
publications.

- Oct/Nov 2007 Board Meeting the Board has now
given approval to include Hindi as one more
language in the R.I's list for translation. Here
is the excerpts from the Board decision on the
captioned subjectF-2. Review of Translation
Policy - DECISION The Board 1. Re-affirms
English as the official language of RI and agrees
to continue providing translations in French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese,
Spanish, and Swedish2. Agrees to begin
providing translation into Hindi as of 1 July
2008 as publications are developed and/or
revised3. Requests the general secretary to
provide cost implications for the addition of
Hindi to the Board at its January 2008 meeting

14RI Official Language
- English is the only official language of RI and
all official documents, including club charters,
shall be issued in English
15Translation of Rotary Literature
- The policy of RI concerning publication of
Rotary literature in languages other than
English, the official language of RI, is - 1) RI will provide translated versions of
essential club and district information in
Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German,
Korean, Italian and Swedish. - 2) All RI publications shall be revised in
English and other languages on a staggered,
triennial basis, with those publications affected
most by the Council on Legislation to be revised
after the Council, - 3) A district or group of districts in which the
Rotarians speak a language(s) other than those
listed above may, on a voluntary basis,
translate, print and distribute essential club
information to the clubs in their district(s).
Publications translated by volunteers shall not
be considered official.

- Rotary emphasizes the great value inherent in
all the worlds languages and endorses efforts to
support and strengthen their contributions to
enhancing the global community and enriching the
worlds culture.

- -The translation and printing of Rotary
literature shall be under the direct supervision
of the G.S. - -The distribution of Rotary literature to
clubs shall be made by the Secretariat.
18Use of Rotarian Volunteers in Translating
- - The G.S shall develop a database of
Rotarians who are able to interpret and translate
into many languages. -
- - In selecting Rotarians to interpret
/translate, the G.S shall ensure that they first
provide a sample of their work.
19Translation of Constitutional Documents of RI
- A note shall be included in all editions of the
Manual of Procedure in languages other than
English preceding the section that includes the
constitutional documents, to indicate - that in the event of any question arising
regarding the meaning or interpretation of any
provision of the constitutional documents, the
English-language text of these documents is the
official text - that each governor has a copy of the
English-language edition of the Manual of
Procedure, including the constitutional
documents - that a copy of the constitutional documents in
English may be obtained by ordering an
English-language.

28Story of the translation project in District 2450
29The early years
- In the early years of Rotary in our region,
Eugene Barakat Lebanese who was one of staff at
RI office of Zurich. He has translated, with the
support of RI, some documents. Then, when Eugene
left the office, all publications were
officially stopped. - Individual efforts were done in Egypt, in Lebanon
and in other Rotary Arab countries to translate
Rotary publications into Arabic language, to
print and to distribute them on hard copies and
on CD as well. - We recognize all these volunteer efforts which
have lightened the road. - These publications were translated, printed and
distributed without RI support. Only the District
2450 has covered the expenses.

with the support of RI, Districts, Clubs and
Rotarians Arabic speaking and International
Districts, Clubs and Rotarians as well. - The direct link with the RI Staff is the key of
success. - A District committee will supervise the project
under the leadership of the District Governor. - To develop a sponsors network worldwide.
- The RI will appoint yearly a Rotarian as RI

Rotarian Linda Smythe
In May 2006, the first medical mission took place
and involved the training of Iraqi Ministry of
Health physicians and medical staff as well as
directly providing treatment to Iraqi amputees
estimated 50000 at the King Hussein Medical
Center in Amman, Jordan.
