Title: Introduction to Hong Kong International Airport

1
Introduction to Hong-Kong International Airport
and critically analyzing the importance of
engaging stakeholders
2
Introduction
  • Hong Kong International Airport is the city's
primary airport, located on the island of Chek
    Lap Kok in Hong Kong.
  • The airport is the biggest trade gateway globally
and one of the busiest passengers airports
  • It also has one of the largest passenger terminal
    buildings in the world
  • Hong Kong International Airport also plays a
major part in the local economy, employing over
    65,000 people.
  • The airport's passenger terminal, designed by
British architect Norman Foster, is one of the
world's biggest enclosed areas, occupying 133
    acres (54 hectares)

3
Construction and cost
  • The development of Hong Kong International
Airport at Chek Lap Kok was one of the industry's
    largest projects.
  • The core programs cost more than 20 billion and
had four main sponsors, 10 distinct programs, 225
construction contracts, and over 1,000 essential
    interfaces.
  • Arup (UK) developed and engineered the 1.3km-long
    passenger terminal.
  • .A consortium comprised of China State Building
    Engineering Corporation, Kumagai Gumi, Maeda
    Corporation, Amec, International Construction,
and Balfour Beatty was awarded the 1.29 billion
passenger terminal construction contract in 1995
  • A joint venture comprising Hsin Chong Aster
Construction Services of Hong Kong, Aster
Associate Termoimplanti of Italy, and Ellis
Mechanical Services of the United Kingdom was
awarded the subcontract for building services
within the terminal (worth around 241 million)

4
Building and facilities
  • Hong Kong Airport was one of the world's largest
    engineering and architectural projects.
  • Hong Kong International Airport is the world's
fourth busiest, with an average of 750 aircraft
take-offs and landings per day and 48.6 million
    passengers handled in 2006.
  • The airport's SkyMart, with 160 shopping stores
and 40 eateries spread across 39,000m2, is among
    the shopping and recreational amenities.
  • There are also free and paid internet lounges,
Wi-Fi connections, several sofas and TV screens,
    and a children's play area.
  • Because of its exceptional amenities, the airport
    was named the world's finest in 2002, 2003, 2004,
    and 2005

Critical Analysis of engaging stakeholders
  • Engaging stakeholders in the early stages of a
project helps the design team to receive feedback
early and, hopefully, eliminate input later.
  • Allowing for stakeholder participation also
promotes trust by giving everyone a chance to be
    heard.
  • Most airfield projects necessitate concessions on
the airport and stakeholders to develop a quality
project on an operating airfield effectively. .
  • Establishing trust and inclusion might make the
people involved more open to required adjustments
    and compromises.
  • Owners and consultants have observed the benefits
of including stakeholders early in the design
    process.

6
Critical Analysis of engaging stakeholders
  • For example, Hong Kong International Airport
(HKIA) has structured cooperation through its
    Stakeholder Engagement Process (SEP).
  • The SEP at HKIA is a systematic process that
requires project teams to convene early input
    meetings, assess alternatives, and collaborate
with stakeholders to define project design
requirements during the planning and programming
    phase..
  • HKIA efficiently aligns expectations between
stakeholders and the design team by recording the
conclusions of the SEP in a public binder for
each project, increasing the possibility of an
    Exception Project outcome.
  • Stakeholder participation is a critical component
of every airport building or capital improvement
project, and it necessitates good interpersonal
    and communication skills.

7
Critical Analysis of engaging stakeholders
  • After completing the HKIA Master Plan 2030
(MP2030) in 2008, the Airport Authority Hong Kong
(AAHK) contacted a broad range of stakeholders to
solicit feedback and clarify the airport's growth
intentions, which included two possibilities for
    long-term HKIA development.
  • The choices were to keep the airport's two
runways or expand HKIA to a three-runway system.
  • From late 2008 to early 2014, Airport authority
Hong Kong organized and participated in 970
stakeholder engagement sessions to explain the
    airport's long-term growth vision. Meetings,
    briefings, seminars, discussion forums,
exhibitions, and airport visits were among the
    activities

8
CONCLUSION
  • HKIA was able to accomplish the goals set for it
    throughout its development era.
  • . It has aided in improving the relevant region's
    economic conditions by promoting globalization
and the development of job possibilities .
  • This has served as a model for higher living
standards, essential for economic progress to
    thrive.
  • Another alteration that has been brought about is
that it has enticed more people to use air
    transportation.
  • HKIA contributes significantly to Hong Kong's
economic value through aviation services and
non-aviation industries that operate at the
airport and produce jobs and cash.

9
Objectives of the Stakeholder Engagement Program
  • 1. Explain the potential environmental effect of
the expansion option, actively assess the views
of key stakeholders, and address their concerns
    as much as possible.
  • 2. Increase knowledge of the necessity for and
procedure for expanding HKIA into a three-runway
    system and resolve project issues.
  • 3. Ensure that communications with stakeholders
and the general public are transparent,
    responsive, and accountable.
  • 4. Promote awareness and appreciation of HKIA's
economic and social achievements and relevance to
the city's overall competitiveness emphasize the
need to retain Hong Kong's role as a major
    international and regional aviation hub.
