- Used servants that worked for 7 years
- As death rate dropped slave became more

8Plymouth Colony Is Created
- In late December of 1620, one hundred and two
men, women, and children began to establish the
second English permanent settlement in the New
World. They christened their plantation New
Plymouth after their last port of call in
England. - The Mayflower sailed from Plymouth, England, and
in Nov., 1620, sighted the coast of Cape Cod. The
ship anchored in Plymouth harbor, and the
Pilgrims established a settlement. - During the first winter of the colony, about half
of the settlers died from scurvy and exposure.
But they soon became more successful with the
help of the Native Americans.

- John Carver, the first governor, died in 1621.
William Bradford then assumed the post - First Thanksgiving celebrated! The feast was
shared by all the colonists and the neighboring
Native Americans.

13- March 4, 1629 the New England Company
reorganized as the Massachusetts Bay Colony - Governmental rights were confirmed by a new
charter from the king - In 1629 Puritans voted to transfer the company
from England to Massachusetts, giving the
Puritans full control of their government. - John Winthrop, a Puritan, was elected governor.
- John Winthrops group grew to thousands.
14- After Winthrops arrival, the Mass Bay Colony
was changed from a trading company to a
commonwealth. - Freemen (adult males) could vote.
- Puritans were interested in reforming the
English church from within. - Roger Williams was exiled to Rhode Island
because of his revolutionary ideas.

Narragansett region - First white settler - William Blackstone
- Founded in 1636 by Roger Williams who was
banished from Massachusetts. - Anne Hutchinson was exiled from MA and brought
settlers who wanted religious freedom

- 1639 - Newport founded by William Coddington
- 1643 - Shawomet (Warwick) founded by Samuel
Gorton - 1657/58 - Protection given to Quakers and Jews
from Holland - May 4, 1776 - Rhode Island became one of the
thirteen colonies to renounce its allegiance to
Great Britain.
20Early Connecticut
- Comprised of religious outcasts that fled from
Massachusetts and headed for the Connecticut
River Valley - Windsor was their first settlement in 1633
- Thomas Hooker was the main founder of Hartford,
Connecticut - 1636 Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield formed
the Connecticut Colony.

- John Winthrop, Jr. received a charter from the
king of England in 1662 - William Leete-Governor of the colony of New
Haven, and later Governor of Connecticut - Thomas Hooker wrote the Fundamental Orders of
Connecticut, the first American constitution
written
22Characteristics of the Colony
- They worked in harmony as brethren of the same
nation and creed - Managed their private and public affairs
prudently and were prosperous
23Founding of Maryland
- John Cabot sailed along Eastern Shore off
present-day Worcester County in 1498. - George Calvert a noblemen was given a charter in
1632. - He died and his son Cecilius was given 10 million
acres on Chesapeake Bay, where his family was
given power of government.

- In Maryland the settlers were free to worship as
they chose under the Maryland Toleration Act in
1649 - The colony was known as Maryland in honor of the
queen of Charles 1 - The colony was a religious refuge, for both the
Puritans and Catholics

- Sir Carteret and Sir Cooper some of the founders
- Established for profit and religious freedom
- some characteristics are lumber, navel stores,

- In 1681 the king Charles II gave William Penn a
charter to settle modern day Pennsylvania. - Penn was a supporter of the Quaker faith. He

- The colonists received 50 acres of land, tools to
work the land and enough supplies to last them
one year - It was used as a rehabilitation colony for
financially challenged - It was used as a buffer against the Spanish
- The colony forbid rum and slavery up until 1751
- 1752 the charter expired
- The land was then turned over to the King
- It never became a military stronghold
