Political Parties
  • There are two major political parties in the
United States The Republican and Democratic
    parties.

There are also minor, or third parties.
Not all candidates for office belong to political
parties.
3
The Democratic Party
  • The oldest political party in the U.S.
  • Symbol is the donkey
  • Considered the more liberal party
  • Believes in stronger state government
  • Believes in more individual control over personal

  • Favors big business

5
Third Parties
  • Third parties are those that do not represent the
Republican or Democratic parties, but still have
    a major impact on elections.
  • Third parties can take votes away from the major
    parties.
  • They also may force the candidates of the two
major parties to address new issues.

6
What Political Parties Do
  • Create platforms of important issues and try to
    promote laws that address them
  • Choose (nominate) candidates to run for office
  • Try to get people to support their candidates,
    issues, and party

7
Campaigns
  • Candidates run campaigns to try to get elected to
    office.

Most candidates campaigns are supported by
their political parties.
Propaganda is often a part of campaigns.
8
Propaganda
  • Glittering Generalities Words that sound
  • good, but dont really mean much
  • Just Plain Folks A candidate tries to
  • convince voters that he or she is a regular
    person -
  • just like you
  • Name-Calling Words meant to make a
  • candidates opponent sound dangerous or bad

9
More Propaganda
  • Symbols (Transfer) A candidates name or
  • picture is linked with something we like and
    admire
  • Testimonial - A well-known or famous person
  • supports a candidate
  • Bandwagon Telling voters that they should
  • support a candidate because everyone else
  • is doing it

10
Voting
Voting has not always been a right shared by all
people in the United States.
  • Originally, the Constitution of the United
States granted voting rights only to male
landowners over the age of 21.

11
Amendments and Other Changes
The 15th Amendment gave black males the right to
vote.
  • The 19th Amendment gave women the right to
    vote.

In 1924, the Indian Citizenship Act gave Native
Americans the right to vote.
12
  • In 1965, the Voting Rights Act made literacy
(reading and writing) tests illegal, so more
    people could vote.

The 26th Amendment gave citizens aged 18-21 the
right to vote.
In 1975, the Amended Voting Rights Act made it
easier for people who dont speak English well to
vote.
13
Voting Requirements
  • Voters must be United States citizens.
  • Voters must be at least 18 years old.
  • Voters must be registered in the area where they
    want to vote.

14
Voting Behavior
  • Although it is a right and responsibility of all
citizens, and an important part of our
representative democracy, only about half of all
people able to vote actually do vote.
