Trends in Family Composition

• In an effort to promote an environment conducive
  to marriage, the Senate heard testimony from Ron
  Haskins on the issue of trends in family
  composition.
• Marriage rates fell, divorce rates rose, and
  non-marital birth rates soared.

Commemorated on Stamps

• In the 57 years from 1893 to 1950, there had been
  only 13 United States Postage stamps
  commemorating the accomplishments of women.
• From 1950 to 2002, there have been more than
  eighty women who have had such a tribute paid to
  them for their life work on a stamp.

United States Congress

• 229 women have been elected or appointed to the
  U.S. Congress.
• Jeannette Rankin, Republican from Montana, was
  the first woman elected to serve in Congress.
• 203 women have served in the House of
  Representatives.
• Of these, 35 were elected to fill vacancies
  caused by their husbands' deaths.
• 33 women have served in the Senate.
• Of these, 8 were chosen to fill vacancies caused
  by their husbands' deaths.
• Seven women went from the House to the Senate.

Sandra Day O'Connor

• Sandra Day OConnor served as the first female
  Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the
  United States.
• She was the crucial swing vote of the Court for
  many of her final years on the bench.
• Prior to joining the Supreme Court, she was a
  politician and jurist in Arizona.
• She was nominated to the Court by President
  Ronald Reagan and served for over twenty-four
  years.
• Following her retirement from the Supreme Court
  she became the Chancellor of the College of
  William and Mary.

• The following is a compilation of statistics
  regarding the work experience of women from 1970
  to 2003.
• It not only shows how the population of women in
  the U.S. increased during those years, but also
  that there was an increase in the percentage of
  women with work experience.

Title IX

• Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972
  states "No person in the United States shall, on
  the basis of sex, be excluded from participation
  in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to
  discrimination under any education program or
  activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
  
• Title IX greatly impacted high school and
  collegiate athletics.
• The legislation covers all educational
  activities, including science or math education
  in addition to athletics.
• It also applies to non-sports activities such as
  school bands and cheerleaders.

Pro Sports

• Although womens pro sports have grown in
  popularity there is still a great disparity in
  salaries.
• Writer John Gettings investigated pay equity
  issues in mens and womens professional sports.
