• Before you begin Flip through the test to get a
  sense of passage length.
• Before reading passages, read the questions.
• READ all of the DIRECTIONS.
• Underline command words in the question and check
  off content as you write your response.

• As you read...
• Mark up the text as you go.
• Mark details that may help answer a question, or
  reveal main ideas.
• Keep asking yourself What is the overall idea
  being presented? How do I know?

• Link your short answer responses to the TEXT.
• (Paraphrase unless the prompt specifically states
  to quote passages.)
• Never write I dont know.
• There are often multiple different correct
  answers
• Only graded on content, not writing skills.

Other Tips...

• Plausible reasonable
• If you are asked to come up with a plausible
  graphic for the selection, you are not being
  asked to draw something. You are being asked to
  think of an appropriate pictorial representation
  and then to explain how that graphic would work
  in context.

• Theme (universal applies to everyone)
• Characterization (but often worded how might he
  characterize himself)

• Vocabulary in context

OGT Grading

• How they grade...
• Each answer has its own rubric based on CONTENT
  of your answers (2 point and 4 point based on
  CONTENT NOT WRITING STYLE). There are often
  multiple different correct answers, so dont
  worry about there just being one correct
  response. Base your answers in the text.
• Students are only scored on correct information.
  If your responses contain wrong or extraneous
  information but also contain correct content,
  they are not penalized. Translation Try it,
  you might get something right!

Reading Test Breakdown

• Reading Passages If the long passage is
  informational text, then one short passage will
  be a literary text. If the long passage is a
  literary text, then both short passages will be
  informational text.
• Item distribution
• Each of the four content related standards is
  assessed by multiple choice items.
• The long passage is assessed with one extended
  response item and up to two short answer items.
• A medium passage is assessed with up to one short
  answer or one extended response.
• Short passages will not be assessed with an
  extended response item. These passages may have
  only one short answer item on each form of the
  test.
