to bed early on Sunday night - -try to get eight hours of sleep each night
before a test - -dont take naps during the day
- Eat healthy
- - get up early enough to eat breakfast at home
so the food has time to digest and work before
the test - - eat a high protein, low sugar breakfast with
wholegrain (wheat toast with peanut butter, eggs
and wheat toast, wholegrain cereal and yogurt) - -avoid high sugar foods all week to avoid sugar
crashes - -avoid foods that upset your stomach all week
(no one wants to sit by a gas bag during the OGT)
7What should I study?
- Review all testing materials your teachers have
given you. - Go to www.ode.state.oh.us and take practice
tests. - Open an internet browser and go to
www.ode.state.oh.us/ - Click on Testing which is almost all the way in
the upper right hand corner of the screen. - Look at the left side of your screen again and
click on Ohio Graduation Tests. - Click on the first red heading Resources for
Ohio Graduation Tests. - Look at the heading that says About Ohio
Graduation Tests. Click on the second link
under that heading OGT Website for Students.
8How long is the test and how many times can I
take it?
- You must pass all 5 sections of the OGT in order
to receive a diploma from Firelands High School
and graduate. - You will take the Ohio Graduation Test March
16-20. After this session, if you have not
passed certain parts, you will be given two
opportunities to pass each of the following
years. In other words, after March, you will
have four (4) more times to pass. - You are given 2 ½ hours for each test. For most
students, this is more than enough time to
complete each test.
9Do I have to take it?
- You should want to pass these tests because your
graduation hangs in the balance. - You must commit yourself to taking each test
seriously and trying your hardest to do well.
You will have to write when you dont feel like
writing, think when you dont feel like thinking
anymore and recheck your answers when you dont
feel like looking at your answers again. - I know that it is difficult, but you have to have
inner-discipline to be successful.
10Whats on the Writing Test?
- Questions about Usage
- (10 QuestionsMultiple Choice) 10pts.
- Short Answer Response
- (1 Questionwithin the usage section) 2pts.
- Extended Response
- (2 Promptsfirst and last items in the test
booklet) 36pts.
11Do you have any tips for taking the writing test?
- 1 YOU should write the two Extended Response
answers FIRST! - 36 of the 48 possible points are tied up in these
two essays. - YOU must do these two essays first. This only
makes sense. - Not an option!
- Doing the essays first will also ensure that you
are fresh, ready and sharp. - 2 Take your time, there is no rush.
- You have 2 ½ hours for this test. You could
spend an hour on each essay and have enough time
to do the 10 multiple choice and 1 short answer. - It is in your best interest to take the full time.
12Do you have tips about the multiple choice
questions on the writing?
- Test Smart!
- Tip 1 Read the problem first, then read the
rules. Do not read the rules first, it will be
a waste of time and may lead to confusion. - Tip 2 Eliminate obviously wrong answers. Get
your possible answers down to two.
13How about the short answer questions?
- Tip 1 Provide ideas that directly deal with the
prompt. Make sure that your ideas are relevant
and within the scope of possibilities. - Tip 2 Provide the number of ideas that they ask
for. The test will always tell you how many
reasons it wants you to give. It usually asks
for two. - Tip 3 This is a short answer response. You do
not have to expand on each reason, only provide
the reasons / ideas.
14How about the 18 pt. questions?
- Tip 1Plan what you are going to write about.
You are given space in the Test Booklet to do
some prewriting activities. You can jot ideas
down, or do a mental map. Watch your time!
Dont spend more than hour on each 18 pt.
question. - Tip 2 Know the question! Recognize if they are
asking you to Persuade or Explain, then write a
five-paragraph essay with funnel introduction,
three body paragraphs with details, and a
conclusion paragraph. Or, if they want you to
Tell a Story, be sure to include the five major
parts of a story. - Tip 3 Be detailed. Go into great detail about
your ideas. The more detailed you are, the
higher your score will be. - Tip 4 Watch your punctuation, grammar and
spelling. You are graded in these areas on the
extended response. Proofread your work. FIX
ERRORS! If you spot an error, cross out what is
wrong and write the correction above the error.
Use a carrot () to insert words. Editing a
mistake is better than leaving it.
15Do my answers have to be true?
- Many students get stumped by prompts. They say,
I dont have a favorite holiday. Or I dont
have a hobby. Or Ive never been on vacation. - It is true, it is always easier to write about
something you truly believe in. Recognize that
you are capable of writing about something you do
not believe. - Fact You will not be arrested for saying that
your favorite hobby is building model airplanes
when it is not. NO ONE WILL KNOW! THEY DONT
CARE!
16Any tips for Reading Multiple Choice Questions?
- Tip 1Read the questions BEFORE you read the
selection. This will help you spot the answers
to the reading comprehension questions. - Tip 2 Do this test in order. You can skip
items, but try to go back and answer all the
questions that go with a reading selection before
you go on to the next selection. - Tip 3Eliminate answers that are obviously
wrong. You can sometimes narrow your choices
from four to two by doing this. -
- Tip 4 After you have eliminated as many
possibilities as you can, substitute each of the
remaining possibilities into the question and
then make the most logical choice. - Tip 5Go with your first instinct. Research has
shown that your first, gut-reaction answer is
usually right. - Tip 6 If you dont know what a word means use
context clues and look for a word within the word
that you have heard before.
17How about the Short Answer Questions?
- Tip 1 Always give the number of examples that
they ask for. They will tell you specifically
how many ideas or examples they want you to
provide. - Tip 2 Make sure that your answer is always
supported by evidence directly from the
selection. This is a test of your reading the
supplied selections. - Tip 3 Write legibly and in complete sentences.
18How about the Extended Response Questions?
- Use the same tips as the short answers questions,
but be more detailed. - These are worth 4pts., so be sure to give all the
information that they request. - Make it easy for the grader to grade!
19YOU ARE READY!!!
- If you have listened
- If you use these tips
- If you are serious
- If you try your hardest
20YOU WILL PASS!!!
