5Budget Update
The FY 2008 Federal budget was not good for
science. The Presidents request for FY 2009 was
very good, but it was not acted upon. There is
currently no Federal budget for FY 2009. We are
now operating under a 6-month Continuing
Resolution.
- The DOE NP and HEP offices have acted very
favorably toward BNL in preparing for the CR - No layoffs or furloughs are planned
- The RHIC run will start ATLAS and Daya Bay
programs are kept on track. - Nonetheless, we are still squeezed. Travel and
other costs need to be carefully monitored.
- Rumors are rampant in Washington
- The Good The new administration may quickly
pass an FY 2009 Budget. - An economic stimulus bill may include funds for
science. - The Bad The CR could be extended for the full
year. - The Ugly check your daily financial pages
- Right now, the agencies are working on three
budgets simultaneously - FY 2009 FY 2010 FY 2011
- So far, long term plans for HEP and NP have not
been de-railed.
