Linkages
By working on the Environmental Sound Management
of Wastes and the Clean Development
Mechanism/Joint Implementation and Carbon
Trading, countries are able to comply both
conventions, assuring a better use of the energy
production and use, avoiding at the same time
climate change consequences

Argentina has developed a National Assessment on
waste - climate energy Strategic Topics
  • Improving minimization, recycling and reuse of
    wastes
  • Enhancing energy recovery from wastes
    -cogeneration of oils-, fulfilling national
goals, by increasing energy supply trough an
    environmental sound management of these
materials, and avoiding the use fossil fuel.
    Collect methane emissions from landfills
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, specially
methane in landfills, by separating organic
compounds in the domestic wastes to control
    anaerobic decomposition
  • Securing new sources of carbon finance from de
global market, foreign investment and technology
    transfer
  • Minimizing the transportation for recycling or
    disposal wastes

Clean Development Mechanism Projects in Argentina
  • Landfill gas extraction and recovery in Villa
    Dominico, Buenos Aires province
  • Antonio Moran Wind Power Plant Project in
    Patagonia Region
  • Landfill gas recovery at the Norte III Landfill
    in Buenos Aires province
  • Olavarría Landfill Gas Recovery Project in
    Buenos Aires province
  • González Catán and Ensenada Landfill Gas Project
    in Buenos Aires province
  • Landfill Gas Use Puente Gallego, Rosario, Santa
    Fe province

Argentina starts working to highlight and
implement the main linkages between BC and UNFCCC
as regards wastes management - energy use -
climate change in these projects

Objectives of the Project
  • To highlight the importance of the waste sector
    for reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Involve in the process pre-consumer (energy,
    industry, building, transportation) and
    post-consumer sectors (waste management)
  • Gaining a comprehensive view of the potential
    contribution that environmental sound management
of wastes can play in achievement climate and
    energy objectives
  • Cooperate with international organizations
addressing waste management, climate change and
    energy-relate issues
  • Interest partners in business and civil society

  • As a country, we are upon an unique opportunity
    to articulate
  • key provisions of Basel Convention and UNFCCC
  • applying for an economic growing and foreign
    investment
  • trough implementing alternatives of energy
    generation
  • and having technology transfer

demonstrating linkages through effective
actions, in a concrete example of sustainable
development
