Title: Pesticide residue trial requirements

1
Pesticide residue trial requirements
  • Act No 36 of 1947
  • Insecticide
  • Fungicides
  • Herbicides
  • Plant Growth Regulants
  • Defoliants

2
Pesticide Residue Requirements
  • Agricultural Remedies Residue Trial Data
    Requirements Document
  • Available on or web page
  • www.nda.agric.za/act36/main.htm
  • The Above document outlines trial requirements
  • Number of sites
  • three sites- areas of intensive cultivation of
    the particular crop
  • Climatic/geographic extremes considered

3
B) Plot Size
  • Size and number of samples determines the
    experimental plot size
  • The ffg to be taken into account
  • The sample can be collected in sufficient
    quantities at each sampling date
  • Sampling does not affect crop growth
  • Quantity of sample is sufficient to compensate
for loss of material through damage

4
C) Dosage Rates
  • Rate at which is intended to be registered for
  • Double the dosage rate if phytotoxic
  • considerations permit this

5
D) Number of Applications
  • Maximum number within the normal period that is
    required to protect the crop
  • Where only a single application is sufficient,
care should be taken to apply at the correct time
  • Only pesticides that will ensure healthy plants
and that will not interfere with the analysis of
the residues of the tested pesticide can be used.
  • Control plot should receive the same treatment.

6
Time of Sampling
  • 1. Negligible residue expectedwithin 7 days a
minimum of 3 intervals after the last treatment
  • 2. More Persistent Chemicals minimum of four
different intervals after the last application
  • 3. Very Persistent Chemicals- minimum of 5
    different intervals

7
Sampling Techniques
  • Must be representative of the whole marketable
    crop
  • The Untreated control must be sampled first
  • Suitable packaging material used
  • Freeze samples immediately

8
SAMPLE Size
  • Depends on the crop.
  • Generally 5 kg for large fruit
  • 2 Kg for small fruit

9
Required Trials
  • A new use active never registered to be used on
    the commodity
  • Application made to edible portion or root for
    both systemic and non-systemic products-
  • trials at 3 sites- 2 at the registered dosage
rate and 1 at 2X rate. Full degradation pattern
  • The same applies if the application is made to
soil, seed, seedling prior to development of
    edible portion

10
Required Trials
  • Registered active but the formulation is new. WP,
SC etc Withholding period longer than 14 days and
application rate of ai the same
  • Made Directly to edible portion- need the same
number of trials but residue at end of official
    withholding period
  • Made to soil, seed or seedling for both systemic
and non systemic 3 trial as above
  • Proof of non presence at commencement of
    development of edible portion

11
  • Similar formulation but the formulator has
    changed
  • Application to edible portion 3 site trials
residue at end of official withholding period
  • Made to soil seed or seedling prior to
development of edible portion Systemic as above
  • Non systemic no data required
