2Mushroom Management
- Mushroom Management is a problem-centered,
collaborative simulation used in classrooms. The
four parts of raising mushrooms parallel the four
phases of productively using simulations in the
classroom. - Put them in the dark
- Feed them manure
- Stand back and watch them grow
- Chop off their heads and ship them
3Put Them In The Dark
- The teacher invests a lot of time and effort into
this stage of the simulation researching and
preparing the students for the problem. - Students have little to no prior knowledge on the
subject, thus the similarity to in the dark. - It is during this time that the teacher gets the
students motivated and ready for the simulation.
4Feed Them Manure
- This stage of the process is rich with
information. Materials and resources are
provided for students to acquire the necessary
skills to solve the problem. - Discussion is pertinent during this phase.
Students are encouraged to discuss the issues
without having to come to a right answer.
5Stand Back and Watch Them Grow
- The teacher acts as a facilitator during this
phase. The teacher creates a safe environment
while monitoring the progress of the groups,
asking leading questions and suggesting
resources. - The classroom changes from a teacher-centered to
a student-centered environment where students are
exploring and discovering the solution together.
6Chop Off Their Heads and Ship Them
- During this phase, students participate in
culminating activities. - Presentations and feedback are given during this
time. Students can see how their solutions
compare and contrast to those of other groups. - Students recognize how this problem-centered
simulation relates to real-world situations. - Students participate in a whole group discussion
where they draw conclusions and assess their
learning.

10Johns ReflectionMushroom Management
(Assignment Brief reflection about the
presentation on the topic and the process to
build it)
The presentation was created in an online group.
Group members decided on the respective roles.
One group member, Karen, created the master slide
and basic content. The others contributed
content slides, per assignment directions. From
my perspective, no major issues were encountered
in creating this presentation. As with all
group projects, one person needed to
provide/create a draft of the finished product
for the group to edit, debate, and decide upon.
That was also accomplished in this
project. Note the only real point of confusion
that I encountered, was the purpose/intent of
this particular slide. There is not much to
reflect on concerning the presentation and
process to build it.
11REFLECTION
- Having to complete a presentation on M.M. forced
me to really think about how I use it in my
classroom. I was surprised at how many ways it
showed up. - Creating this as a group turned out to be less
challenging than I initially expected. At first
I wasnt sure how we would get all our slides put
together, but I think Karen figured it out
nicely. - Katie
12Reflection-Karen Montgomery
- The building process of this presentation was
exceptional. - In our chat we collaborated on a proper summary
for Mushroom Management. - Each team member knew their roles and submitted
their slides on time. - The final product was definitely a team effort
