2- Funding Unit created in 2004, the year of EU
enlargement, since when the CEI encompasses - 2 old EU Members (Italy, Austria)
- 5 new EU Members (Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia,
Czech Republic, Poland) - 3 EU Candidate Countries (Bulgaria, Romania,
Croatia) - 4 Western Balkans Countries (Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Serbia and Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia) - 3 NIS countries (Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus)

- Partner search assistance in Central and Eastern
Europe - Promoting CEI participation in EU projects

- Disseminating project activities, contacts and
results throughout the wide territory of CEI - Promoting horizontally institutional links
between those countries not directly involved in

12Conclusions
- As with other spheres of the CEI activity, the
flexibility is the important factor CEI able to
adapt and interpret its roles projects in
various sectors, various roles of the CEI - As with other instruments of CEI co-operation,
availability of instruments (Cooperation Fund,
Funding Unit, CEI Networks) at the disposal of
the Member States to utilize it in the best way
they find appropriate - The CEI asset are its Networks, not only new
ones (University, ST), but networks of people
such as Working Groups for example, Network is a
key word for co-operation
13Conclusions
- Cooperation projects at European level prepared
and carried out by a Consortium of partners, CEI
institutional framework ideal for comprehensive
initiatives involving EU and non EU countries
interesting - CEI an area with its specific problems where
action can better be performed jointly (e.g.
strategic projects, planning projects, pilots, in
transport, environment, innovation, Lisbon
Agenda...) - CEI experience in multilateral co-operation for
successfully promoting transnational projects in
the CEI region!
