Title: A Study of Romans:
1A Study of Romans
- 2. Mans Need for Salvation
2Romans 116-17 ASV
- For I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the
power of God unto salvation to every one that
believeth to the Jew first, and also to the
Greek. 17 For therein is revealed a
righteousness of God from faith unto faith as it
is written, But the righteous shall live by
faith.
3The Gospel in Romans 116-17
- It is Gods power
- It saves those who believe it
- It has universal application
- It reveals Gods plan of justification by faith
4Romans
- Chapter 1 The Gospels Power to Save
- Chapter 1-3 Mans need for Salvation
- Chapter 3-5 Justification by Faith
- Chapter 6-8 Living by Faith
- Chapter 9-11 Gods Chosen People
- Chapter 12-16 Living for Jesus
5Romans 118 NKJV
- For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven
against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of
men
6Mankind is Headed to Hell
- Two ways to get there
- Like the unrighteous Gentiles
- Like the upright Gentiles and Jews
7Romans 118-32 NKJV
- For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven
against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of
men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
19 because what may be known of God is manifest
in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For
since the creation of the world His invisible
attributes are clearly seen, being understood by
the things that are made, even His eternal power
and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,
8Romans 118-32 NKJV
- 21 because, although they knew God, they did not
glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became
futile in their thoughts, and their foolish
hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise,
they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of
the incorruptible God into an image made like
corruptible man -- and birds and four-footed
animals and creeping things.
9Romans 118-32 NKJV
- 24 Therefore God also gave them up to
uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to
dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who
exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and
worshiped and served the creature rather than the
Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
10Romans 118-32 NKJV
- 26 For this reason God gave them up to vile
passions. For even their women exchanged the
natural use for what is against nature. 27
Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of
the woman, burned in their lust for one another,
men with men committing what is shameful, and
receiving in themselves the penalty of their
error which was due.
11Romans 118-32 NKJV
- 28 And even as they did not like to retain God
in their knowledge, God gave them over to a
debased mind, to do those things which are not
fitting 29 being filled with all
unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness,
covetousness, maliciousness full of envy,
murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness they are
whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God,
violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil
things, disobedient to parents,
12Romans 118-32 NKJV
- 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving,
unforgiving, unmerciful 32 who, knowing the
righteous judgment of God, that those who
practice such things are deserving of death, not
only do the same but also approve of those who
practice them.
13Mankind is Headed to Hell
- Two ways to travel it
- Like the unrighteous Gentiles
- Like the upright Gentiles and Jews
14Romans 21-11 NKJV
- Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you
are who judge, for in whatever you judge another
you condemn yourself for you who judge practice
the same things. 2 But we know that the
judgment of God is according to truth against
those who practice such things.
15Romans 21-11 NKJV
- 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge
those practicing such things, and doing the same,
that you will escape the judgment of God?
16Two Systems of Justification
- By Works of the Law
- Requires perfect works (Rom. 105 James 210-11)
- ONE PROBLEM
- We fail because we sin - Rom. 320
- Only Jesus met this standard
- By Faith
- Requires perfect faith (Jam. 222)
- Saving faith
- Includes obedience of faith
- Does not exclude works, requires works
- James 214-17
- Otherwise it is dead
17James 210-11 NKJV
- For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet
stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. 11
For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," also
said, "DO NOT MURDER." Now if you do not commit
adultery, but you do murder, you have become a
transgressor of the law.
18Romans 320 NKJV
- Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will
be justified in His sight, for by the law is the
knowledge of sin.

- James 214-17
- Otherwise it is dead
20James 214-17 NKJV
- What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says
he has faith but does not have works? Can faith
save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked
and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you
says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and
filled," but you do not give them the things
which are needed for the body, what does it
profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it
does not have works, is dead.
21James 222 NKJV
- Do you see that faith was working together with
his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
22Two Other Systems of Justification
- By Relative Goodness
- Requires doing more good than evil
- The 51 Solution
- ONE PROBLEM
- God does not offer this way
- James 210
23James 210-11 NKJV
- For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet
stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. 11
For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," also
said, "DO NOT MURDER." Now if you do not commit
adultery, but you do murder, you have become a

- By Faith Only
- Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved
Acts 1631 - Nothing further is required
- ONE PROBLEM
- God does not offer this way
- James 224
26James 224 NKJV
- You see then that a man is justified by works,
and not by faith only.

28Romans 21-11 NKJV
- 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge
those practicing such things, and doing the same,
that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or
do you despise the riches of His goodness,
forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that
the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
29Romans 21-11 NKJV
- 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your
impenitent heart you are treasuring up for
yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation
of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who "WILL
RENDER TO EACH ONE ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS"
30Romans 21-11 NKJV
- 7 eternal life to those who by patient
continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor,
and immortality 8 but to those who are
self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey
unrighteousness -- indignation and wrath, 9
tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who
does evil, of the Jew first and also of the
Greek 10 but glory, honor, and peace to
everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first
and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no
partiality with God.
31Mankind is Headed to Hell
- Two ways to get there
- Like the unrighteous Gentiles
- Like the upright Gentiles and Jews
32Mankind is Headed to Hell
- Two ways to get there
- Like the unrighteous Gentiles
- Like the upright Gentiles and Jews
- Judgment Day is the end of the road
33Romans 212-16 NASB
- For all who have sinned without the Law will also
perish without the Law, and all who have sinned
under the Law will be judged by the Law 13 for
it is not the hearers of the Law who are just
before God, but the doers of the Law will be
justified 16 on the day when, according to my
gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through
Christ Jesus.
34Mankind is Headed to Hell
- Two ways to get there
- Like the unrighteous Gentiles
- Like the upright Gentiles and Jews
- Judgment Day is the end of the road
- Answering Jewish objections
35Cant the Jews be Justified by Works of the Law?
- How they viewed themselves (217-20)
- Their inconsistency (221-23)
- The testimony of Scripture (39-19)
36Romans 39-19 NASB
- What then? Are we better than they? Not at all
for we have already charged that both Jews and
Greeks are all under sin 10 as it is written,
"THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE 11
THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO
SEEKS FOR GOD 12 ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE,
TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS THERE IS NONE
WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE." - 13 "THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR
TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING," "THE POISON OF ASPS
IS UNDER THEIR LIPS"
37Romans 39-19 NASB
- "WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS"
- "THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, 16
DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, 17
AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN." - "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES."
- 19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it
speaks to those who are under the Law, so that
every mouth may be closed and all the world may
become accountable to God
38Mankind is Headed to Hell
- Two ways to get there
- Facing away from God
- Facing toward God
- Judgment Day is the end of the road
- Answering Jewish objections
- All are condemned
39Romans 320 NASB
- because by the works of the Law no flesh will be
justified in His sight for through the Law comes
the knowledge of sin.
40We need something OTHER THAN Justification by
Works
- No one can be justified this way
- We understand the law
- The law is RIGHT
- We are WRONG
41Conditions of Justification
- Believe (John 824)
- Repent (Luke 135)
- Confess (Rom. 1010 Matt. 1032-33)
- Be Baptized (Mk. 1616 John 35)
- Live Faithfully (Rev. 211)
