this world, with Jesus Christ as the Head, for
the purpose of filling the earth with the
knowledge of Christ.

2. In the church, elders lead the church as a
SHEPHERD leads his FLOCK. Therefore, I exhort
the elders (presbuteros) among you, as your
fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of
Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is
to be revealed, shepherd (poimaino) the flock
(poimnion) of God among you, exercising oversight
(episkopeo) not under compulsion, but
voluntarily, according to the will of God and
not for sordid gain, but with eagerness

nor yet as lording it over those allotted to
your charge, but proving to be examples to the
flock. And when the Chief Shepherd (Archipoiman)
appears, you will receive the unfading crown of
glory. 1 Peter 51-4

• 3. ROLES of an elder
• Men who PRAY.
• Now at this time while the disciples were
  increasing in number, a complaint arose on the
  part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native
  Hebrews, because their widows were being
  overlooked in the daily serving of food.
• So the twelve summoned the congregation of the
  disciples and said, "It is not desirable for us
  to neglect the word of God in order to serve
  tables. Acts 61-4

men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of
wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.
But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the
ministry of the word." Acts 61-4

• Men who PROTECT the flock.
• Leaders with spiritual authority are in the heat
  of the spiritual battle.
• From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to
  him the elders (presbuteros) of the church. And
  when they had come to him, he said to them Be on
  guard for yourselves and for all the flock
  (poimnion), among which the Holy Spirit has made
  you overseers (episkopos), to shepherd (poimaino)
  the church of God which He purchased with His own
  blood.

4. How do members RELATE to the elders? 1
Timothy 517-25 The elders who rule well are to
be considered worthy of double honor, especially
those who work hard at preaching and teaching.
For the Scripture says, "YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE THE
OX WHILE HE IS THRESHING," and "The laborer is
worthy of his wages.

Do not receive an accusation against an elder
except on the basis of two or three witnesses.
Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence
of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of
sinning. I solemnly charge you in the presence of
God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels,
to maintain these principles without bias, doing
nothing in a spirit of partiality.

Do not lay hands upon anyone too hastily and
thereby share responsibility for the sins of
others keep yourself free from sin. No longer
drink water exclusively, but use a little wine
for the sake of your stomach and your frequent
ailments. The sins of some men are quite evident,
going before them to judgment for others, their
sins follow after. Likewise also, deeds that are
good are quite evident, and those which are
otherwise cannot be concealed. 1 Timothy 517-25
