Servant Leadership
Presented by Ed Gilman

Are You A Leader?
Servant Leadership
3
What is a Leader?
  • A Leader is someone called by God to lead,
whose character honors God, and who possesses the
competencies to be effective. George Barna

4
Gods Leadership School
  • God develops His leaders over their lifetime.
  • He begins by calling them to ministry, each
person specifically chosen for His purpose.
  • He then prepares equips them for ministry.
    (even though learning is a
    lifetime experience)
  • He then places them in ministry.
  • (typically they feel inadequate at first)
  • He then begins to prepare them for His next
    assignment in ministry.
  • The most important part of Gods development of a
    leader is in character.

    (being who God wants, comes
    before doing what God wants)

5
A Chronological time-line of your life
  • List all the significant people and events that
helped shape your life and ministry.
  • (Birth, family, church, influencers,
    mileposts)
  • Next, look at your time-line and see if you can
group several of these significant pieces into
phases of development in your life.
    (ie childhood, education, 1st
    ministry, etc)
  • Determine what God was doing in you in each of
    these phases.

The New Testament Model
is the Servant Leadership
of Jesus!
9
Jesus came as a Servant
Servant Leadership
is the Biblical Model
  • who although He existed in the form of God did
not regard equality with god a thing to be
grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of
a bond-servant and being made in the likeness of
    men
  • - Philippians 26-7

10
Servant Leadership
is the Biblical Model
  • The Servant Principle is Christs revolutionary
way of the heart which challenges our core
beliefs and values, rivets our affections on
Jesus Himself, and compels us to live and love
    like Him.
  • - Rick Ferguson The Servant Principle

The servant heart is not part of our original
equipment.
11
Servant Leadership
is the Biblical Model
  • A servant leader is one who has been called,
transformed, gifted, and empowered by God, to
serve Him and the needs of others, before their
    own concerns.
  • - Ed Gilman, 2004

You cannot become a servant leader through
self-improvement books or seminars, God must
transform you, but you must surrender your will
to Him unconditionally.
12
Servant Leadership
is the Biblical Model
  • Only through a life of service can we truly
fulfill our purpose in this world and find
    absolute meaning in life.
    Rick
    Ferguson, The Servant Principle

Servant leaders dont focus on pleasing others,
they focus on serving their Master.
13
Servant Leadership
is the Biblical Model
  • Becoming a servant leader requires more than
just outward behavior. It is an inside job. Its
about the heart. Changing someones thinking is
important, but it isnt enough. Jesus message
is not just for the mind, its directed at the
heart. Jesus wants us to be before we do
    anything. Its a character issue.
  • - Blanchard, Hybels, Hodges- Leadership by the
    Book

14
Servant Leadership
is the Biblical Model
  • God is not necessarily looking for leaders, at
least not in the sense we generally think of
leaders. He is looking for servants.
  • Spiritual leaders do not try to satisfy the
goals and ambitions of the people they lead but
those of the God they serve.
  • Jesus has established the model for Christian
leaders. It is not found in his methodology.
Rather, it is seen in his absolute obedience to
    the Fathers will.
  • Henry Richard Blackaby- Spiritual
    Leadership

15
Servant Leadership
is the Biblical Model
  • The Bible doesnt give us detailed instructions
covering every issue of leadership. If it did,
some would find a way to manipulate it.
  • Instead, the Bible approaches leadership from the
    character viewpoint in servant leadership.
  • Our culture approaches leadership from the
viewpoint of control, taking charge, and being
    the boss.
  • The Bible teaches that those who are
servant-leaders assume leadership only if they
are called there to serve in the best interest
    of others.

16

Seven Principles of Servant Leadership
Jesus on Leadership- Gene Wilkes
17
1- Servant leaders humble themselves and wait for
God to exalt them. Luke 147-11
  • No one can be a servant without a master.
  • You must decide whether or not to design you life
after Jesus or the best thinking the world has to
    offer.
  • You cannot serve two masters. (Matthew 624)
  • You must answer the question, who is master of
    my life?
  • Kingdom leaders are people who lead like Jesus.
    (Philippians 25-11)

Humility comes before honor- Proverbs 1533b
18
2- Servant leaders follow Jesus rather than seek
a position.
Mark 1032-40
  • Servant leadership is not about position or
    power.
  • Servant leaders are not created by giving
    commands, but by obeying their
    Commander.
  • Servant leaders yield their will to Christs
    will, the
    real leader of the church.
  • Servant leaders follow Jesus example in serving
    others and
    suffering on their behalf.

Servant leaders dont promote themselves, they
wait on Gods promotion.
19
3- Servant leaders give up personal rights to
find greatness in service to others.
Mark 1041-45
  • Servant leaders make Jesus Master in their life
    and become servant to others.
  • To lead in the Kingdom of God is to serve others
    and to follow the King.
  • Jesus modeled what He called others to do
  • For even the Son of Man did not come to be
served, but to serve, and to give his life as a
    ransom for many. Mark 1045
  • Jesus entire mission was to free others, not to
    gain position for Himself.

20
4- Servant leaders can risk serving others
because they trust that God is
in control of their lives.
John 133
  • The servant leader knows their power comes from
    God.
  • Jesus redefined what leaders do leaders meet
    needs.
  • Jesus modeled what He had been teaching about
servant leadership when He left the head table to
assume the role of a servant and washed their
    feet.

21
5- Servant leaders take up Jesus towel of
servanthood to meet the needs of others.
John 134-11
  • Servant leaders do not lack resolve or insight
and do not waver in doing their Masters wishes.
  • Leaders sometimes must reveal a need before
    meeting it.
  • Servant leaders may have to humble themselves
before those who will become their enemies.

22
6- Servant leaders share their responsibility and
authority with others to meet a greater need.
Acts 61-6
  • Servant leaders cannot give their leadership
away, but they do share or
delegate both rewards and responsibility to
    others.
  • Jesus shared His authority and responsibility
with others in order to spread the gospel around
    the world.
  • Servant leaders know they are most effective when
they trust others to work with them.

23
7- Servant leaders multiply their leadership by
empowering others to lead. Exodus
1817-23
  • Paul multiplied his leadership when he mentored
and entrusted young Timothy, and then told him to
    multiply his ministry through others.
  • Jesus multiplies His leadership by empowering
His disciples with the Holy Spirit.
  • Servant leaders understand that empowerment
    always comes before mission.

24
A Servant Leader
Is A Coach
  • Their main aim is the best interest of those they
    coach.
  • They get personal satisfaction from watching the
personal growth and development of the person
    being coached.
  • They address issues such as
    empowerment and enhancement
    of the person.

25
A Servant Leader Is A
Coach
  • They assess the situation by asking questions,
    listening, and being process-oriented.
  • They have a loving care for those they coach.
  • They enable rather than tell the answer, and
    encourage rather than discourage.

26
A Servant Leader
Is A Coach
  • They focus them on self-discovery and follow
    through with implementation
  • They come alongside in a
    covenant relationship as
    a partner.
  • They are conceptual and feeling,
    and focus on Biblical principles.

27
A Servant Leader
Is A Coach
The servant leader COACH, is to help their
people produce good results by modeling and
encouraging the behaviors and values that are
aligned with a shared vision. Blanchard,
Hybels, Hodges- Leadership by the Book

  • Maintain Rights No Rights
  • Excellence Christlikeness
  • Self Preservation Die to Self
  • Accomplishments Character
  • Happiness in Acquiring Happiness in Giving
  • Eat, Drink, Be Merry Seek First The Kingdom

29
A Servant Model
  • When we think of a Biblical model for servant
leadership we must turn to Mark 1042-43.
  • Jesus displayed servant leadership in many ways,
but perhaps the most graphic was the time He took
the basin and the towel and washed his disciples
    feet.
  • Jesus message was not just for the mind, it was
for the heart. His underlying message was about
character change. Rather than asking us to do
kind things, He wants us to become kind
people. Then all our actions will be motivated
    by kindness.

30
A Servant Model
  • Jesus mandated a form of leadership thats
radically different from the model were usually
most familiar with He showed us the true
leadership starts on the inside with a servant
heart, then moves outward to serve others
character in the form of a servant heart precedes
the use of effective leadership methods.
  • - Blanchard, Hybels, Hodges Leadership by the
    Book

31
Two Kinds of Leaders
  • People who are leaders first.
  • They naturally want to lead. They will try to
control, make decisions, and give orders. They
are driven to lead and want to be in charge. They
are possessive about their leadership position.
They dont like feedback, its threatening to
    them.
  • People who are servants first.
  • They assume leadership only if that is the best
way they can serve. They are called to lead
rather than driven, because they naturally want
to be helpful. They are not possessive about
leadership and willingly give it up if someone
more effective is available. They love feedback
because they see it as helping them serve better.
    They can lead or follow.

36
Servant Ministry
  • We must remember that our commander-in-chief
is Christ Jesus Our Lord. God has placed us in
situations according to His will and His
purposes. In other words, we dont wait to see
how our employer treats us before deciding how
hard to work. Rather, we work as if Christ were
our overseer, and in reality He is. God places us
where He wants us to make a difference as His
    servants.
  • - Henry Blackaby The Man God Uses

37
Definition of Ministry
  • Ministry takes place when divine resources meet
human needs through loving channels to the glory
    of God.
  • Warren W. Wiersbe On Being
    a Servant of God

38
Servant Leadership
  • God does not ask leaders to dream big dreams for
Him or to solve the problems that confront them.
He asks leaders to walk with Him so intimately
that, when He reveals what is on His agenda, they
will immediately adjust their lives to His will
and the results will bring Glory to God.
  • Spiritual leaders dont sell vision they share
what God has revealed to them and trust that the
Holy Spirit will confirm that same vision in the
    hearts of their people.

Henry Richard Blackaby Spiritual Leadership
39
Servant Leaders Equippers
of the Saints
  • Servants lead out of relationship, not by
    coercion.
  • Servants lead by support, not by control.
  • Servants lead by developing others, not by doing
    all the ministry.

40
Servant Leaders Equippers
of the Saints
  • Leaders with servant hearts have genuine
humility, but they also have confidence. They
dont think less of themselves, they just think
    about themselves less.
  • - Blanchard, Hybels, Hodges-
    Leadership by the Book

41
Servant Leaders
Equippers of the Saints
  • In a smaller church of up to 200 members the
pastor can do all the work, and many do. But such
a church will not be able to grow past that point
without lay ministry. Pastors of growing
churches, whether they be large or small, know
how to motivate their laypeople, how to create
structures which permit them to be active
productive, how to guide them into meaningful
    avenues of Christian service.
  • Peter Wagner- Your Church Can Grow

42
Servant Leaders
Equippers of the Saints

An effective leader accomplishes the work
through others. The task is too great for one
person. It is more important for the leader of a
growing church to produce other leaders than to
perform personal ministry.
Carl George How to Break Growth Barriers
