Tactics In Hisotry That Follow Sun Tzus Art of
War
  • Throughout history there are literally thousands
of examples where Sun Tzus war tactics were
    applied.
  • I will provide six separate cases in which a
different guideline was used either before,
    during, or after the conflict.

3
Spring of 218 B.C.
  • XI. The Nine Situations
  • 13. In difficult ground, keep steadily on the
    march.
  • Difficult ground is described as mountain
forests, rugged steeps, and country that is hard
traverse. Hannibal led 35,000 troops through the
Alps, in which only 26,000 survived.
  • By steadily marching on, Hannibal was able to
arrive in Italy a few days before the enemy was
    prepared for them.
  • Had Hannibal hesitated or even turned back in
this difficult terrain, the outcome of the war
might not have worked so well in his favor.

4
War of 1812 1812-1814
  • The Attack By Fire XII.
  • 8. When the force of the flames has reached its
height, follow it up with an attack if that is
practicable if not, stay where you are.
  • In 1814 the British set fire to the White House
in an attempt to demoralize the nation in hopes
of taking control of America as it once had.
  • As the fire was buring the British continued to
attack and burn other buildings that were of
    importance to America.
  • The fire destroyed several rare and precious
documents and works of art, but eventually the
fire was put out and the building restored to its
    original condition.

5
Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941
  • The Nine Situations XI.
  • 19. Rapidity is the essence of war take
advantage of the enemys unreadiness, make your
way by unexpected routes, and attack unguarded
    spots.
  • The Japanese launched a massive attack against a
very unprepared United States of America.
  • Several battleships were destroyed along with 188
planes and 2,403 were left dead.

6
D-Day June 6, 1944
  • Tactical Dispositions IV.
  • 20. The onrush of a conquering force is like
the bursting of pent-up waters into a chasm a
    thousand fathoms deep.
  • The United States, Great Britian, and Candian
forces eventually overwhelmed the Axis powers on
    the beaches of France.
  • This was due mainly to the onslaught of troops in
a place where the enemy was unsuspecting.
  • The Allied powers numbers were simply too much
to defend against, leading to a successful effort
in occupying part of France once again.

7
Desert Storm - 1991
  • Maneurvering VII.
  • 36. When you surround an army, leave an outlet
free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard.
  • The United States followed this tactic during
Desert Storm when General H. Norman Schwarzkopf
allowed Iraqi troops to return safely to Baghdad.
  • This was used to show the Iraqis mercy and prove
to the world our motive was only to liberate
    Kuwait.

8
Gulf War - 2002
  • Attack By Stratagem III.
  • 8. It is a the rule in war, if our forces are
ten to the enemys one, to surround him if five
to one, to attack him if twice as numerous, to
    divide our army into two.
  • The United States followed this tactic again in
Iraq as we overwhelmed the Iraqi troops due to
the fact that we so heavily outnumbered the
    enemy.
  • This method proved to be very successful, however
our current operations there are a little
    unstable.

9
Tactics In Hisotry That Do NotFollow Sun Tzus
Art of War
  • On the other side of the point, there are also
many examples where either side in the conflict
went against the tactics Sun Tzu proposed.
  • I will provide a couple examples of when this was
    the case.

10
Vietnam 1945-1975
  • Waging War II.
  • 6. There is no instance of a country having
    benefited from prolonged warfare.
  • The first combat troops were actually in place by
1945 and the last troops were pulled out in 1975
    a span of twenty years.
  • During this time over 58,000 troops died and over
300,000 troops were either wounded or MIA/POW.
  • During this time millions of dollars worth of
supplies, ammunition, and aircraft were destroyed
in the fighting, not to mention the post-war
    costs of foreign aid.

11
Gulf War - 2003
  • Waging War II.
  • 15. Hence a wise general makes a point of
foraging on the enemy. One cartload of the
enemys provisions is equivalent to twenty of
    ones own
  • The United States is definitely not following
this guideline of war. Not only did our troops
not forage on the Iraqi troops, but the U.S.
government has pledged millions of dollars to
    help the enemy.
  • Currently the U.S. has committed 1.7 billion to
    the reconstruction of Iraq.
