7Technology News United Air to offer in-flight
e-mail
- CHICAGO, June 17 Get Message
- Inflight e-mail and instant messaging are about
to become fixtures of the U.S. skies. - Hoping to get a jump on the competition in the
scramble for business travelers, United Airlines
announced Tuesday that it will be the first
commercial carrier to offer two-way e-mail
capability aboard all its domestic flights.

- By year-end, passengers on all flights will be
able to plug their laptops into jacks on the
Verizon Airfone handsets, which will use
technology by Tenzing Communications to transmit
e-mails. - United has offered JetConnect service on a trial
basis on some 767 domestic aircraft since
December charging 5.99 per flight for instant
messaging, one-way text messaging and select
news, weather and other information. - It is now expanding to JetConnect with e-mail,
which increases the cost to 15.98 but enables
passengers to send and receive e-mail, including
attachments.

networks - TOKYO, June 16 Scared of losing your pooch?
Japans largest home and office security provider
plans to presents a new service to track missing
dogs.

- Japans largest home and office security provider
Secom Co Ltd said on Monday it plans to unleash a
new service later this month to track missing
dogs, using satellite-based global positioning
systems (GPS) and mobile phone networks. - Owners can place a sensor which Secom said is
the worlds smallest and lightest mobile GPS
terminal at 48 grams around the dogs neck in a
small pouch or on its back using a full-body
harness. - The company said the sensor might be too heavy
for small dogs and cats.

- Dog owners can locate their missing pet within 50
meters on a Web site by typing in a username and
password or by placing a call to the Secom phone
center. - The technology used by Secom is an extension of a
similar service offered since April 2001 for
tracking young children, the elderly and missing
automobiles.
