ROLE OF THE UNIVERSITIES WITHIN THE SPANISH
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGICAL SYSTEM
?The university is a public service that assumes
the responsibility of higher education
contributing through the generation of knowledge
to the scientific and technological growth. ? The
university is one of the agents of the innovation
system ? The Spanish Universities share the
Spanish innovation market providing scientific
and technological services to companies and
social agents (during year 2000 the global amount
of RD contracts was 206,4 millions of euros)

IT CORRESPONDS TO THE UNIVERSITY THE TRADE OF
THEIR OWN RD RESULTS
?The RD results (knowledge, know-how, services
or products) incorporate value to the
corresponding research group and to the patrimony
of the University. ?The exploitation of RD
results by third parties implies some incomes as
percentage for the University

CHANNELS OF MANAGEMENT OF THE RD RESULTS AT THE
UNIVERSITIES
? Scientific diffusion ? Marketing of capacities
and resources (technological Services RDI) ?
Marketing of results (Transference of technology,
know-how, licenses...) ? Self-exploitation of
results creation of RD base companies
(spin-off)

technology or an innovating service, ? whithout
any liaison with third parties ? in accordance
with the institutional policy and the strategy of
the research group ? in an area of feasible
business

TWO KEY ASPECTS IN THE START-UP OF SPIN-OFFS
? Existence of physical infrastructures ?
Existence of suitable financial instruments

THE VISION OF OUR UNIVERSITY ABOUT THE START-UP
OF SPIN-OFFS
? To support marketable RD results ? To
encourage young researcher to become
entrepreneurs through a specific business
training program ? To search for financial
support and physical infrastructures
