How to Discipline Your Young Child?
2
  • For many parents, coming up with some effective
ways to have their child disciplines is among the
toughest and most frustrating tasks that comes
    with parenting.
  • It is a seemingly never-ending test of will
    between the child and parent.
  • Because the moment your child realizes that he
cant just hit his baby sister, theyd latch onto
some or the other bothersome behavior, thus
    starting the whole process over.

3
  • So, what does it mean to you when it comes to
    disciplining your young child?
  • Some may equate it with punishing their child and
    spanking them.
  • This is however not the correct thing to do.
  • The parenting experts and teachers at the
preschool in Gotri suggest that disciplining is
about setting strict rules that are meant to
prevent your child from engaging in behaviors
that are inappropriate, dangerous and aggressive.
  • Its also about following up with consequences
    whenever they break any rules.

4
  • Following are some strategies that parents can
use with their child to set limits to their bad
    behaviors

5
  • know what triggers your child
  • There are some misbehaviors that are preventable,
provided that the parents are capable of
    successfully anticipating.
  • What would spark such behaviors and thereby
create some distraction or a game plan in
advance, such as removing that tangible
    temptation.
  • For instance, a child may take much delight in
dragging toilet paper rolls around the house.
  • The parent may try telling him no the first few
    times.
  • But when the child repeats the same behavior the
third time, it is high time that the parent puts
the toilet paper rolls on the higher shelf in the
    bathroom.

6
  • where the child wouldnt be able to reach,
suggests the teacher at the preschool in Kalali
    Vadodara.
  • For little kids, such activities are nothing but
    irresistible fun.
  • However, it would be much easier for both parents
and kids to just take these temptations out of
their way rather than arguing about the same.

7
  • Pick your battles
  • Parents should avoid saying no every time that
their child does something mischievous or asks
    for something irrational.
  • When parents keep repeating the same no every
time, kids would gradually just tune out this
term and start ignoring the no itself, and
    wouldnt understand your priorities.
  • Additionally, one couldnt really follow through
with all the times that they say no. Parents need
to define whats important to them and thereby
set certain limits as per those things, and
follow the same with appropriate consequences.
  • Further parents may choose to ease up on the
smaller things that might be annoying but can
also easily fall into the who cares category
habits that your kid would outgrow most likely,
such as insisting on wearing only green.

8
  • Be consistent
  • When children are between the age of 2 and 3,
they are working very hard to understand how
their behaviors have impacts on the people around
    them.
  • So, it is important that parents maintain
    consistency
  • if parents change their reactions to situations
every time, then it would only confuse the child
    with mixed signals.
