Collection of artworks that show the different ways that artists have chosen to depict winter and how artists have been inspired by the coldest season. Winter has always inspired artists. Some choose to reflect human emotions in the ice, snow and mist. Others show a realistic view of winter, from the early morning light on frost-covered trees to city architecture covered with snow. In the twentieth century artists have explored the season through an abstract lens.
Each color has a hidden meaning and exerts its effects on an unconscious level. Admired during Antiquity, red was worn by the gods and the clergy. In Rome, it is the color of generals, nobility, patricians and Roman emperors. The color red primarily symbolizes happiness in China, but it also symbolizes life, flames and heat. But it also symbolizes death, the latter being considered as rebirth in Asia. Asian funeral processions are still colored red today. In the sacred texts of Christians, Egyptians, Hebrews and Arabs, this color has always been associated with fire and divine love, and has symbolized divinity and worship. Red is a symbol of love, warmth, sensuality and passion. It brings a feeling of warmth. It is the most powerful color, the most dynamic and with the strongest potential for action.

Seasons are a main theme in the Japanese culture. Tsuyu (literally "plum rain," since plums ripen during this time) brings the water needed to flood rice fields. As such, the Japanese consider the coming of tsuyu vitally important to the well-being of the country, and traditionally have conducted rain-making rituals (amagoi) that include prayers, religious offerings to the gods, and special dances

Shoko Uemura (1902-2001) studied under Nishiyama Suisho upon entering the Kyoto City School of Painting in 1921. While at school, his work was accepted for display at the 3rd Teiten for the first time, and he later played a major role in a number of government-sponsored exhibitions (the Society for Creation of Art)". He played an active role in the Society for Creation of Art, reinventing Nihonga and imbuing fresh perspectives to paintings of birds and flowers by reinforcing them with modern compositions while still retaining the traditional sketching techniques. He was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit for his distinguished work in 1959

Sunflowers have famously been depicted by impressionist and post-impressionist artists Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. While these two giants in the art world were European, the flower has a distinctly American origin. The sunflower was introduced to Europe by the Spanish around 1500. Before that, sunflowers were considered an important food crop and may have been one of the first plants domesticated in the Americas.

The striking contrast between the vivid poppies and their green stems gives artists a powerful visual element to capture emotion and provoke contemplation in their viewers. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, poppies are laden with symbolic significance that transcends mere visual representation, carrying deep cultural and historical connotations that enrich the tapestry of artistic expression.

In fact, words are well adapted for description and the arousing of emotion, but for many kinds of precise thought other symbols are much better. (John B. S. Haldane).
