• midday a great fish bite into
• couldn't pull the marlin into the boat -gt fish

• 3rd day, Santiago could kill the marlin with the
  harpoon

• on way home -gt sharks came, because of the blood

interpretation

• fisherman Gregorio Fuentes is pattern of Santiago
• Hemingway know him from Cuba, friendship
• must see all symbolic
• should show the conflict between human and
  nature, also between life and religion
• You can defeated, but not destroyed!
• gt Don't give up!

• 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
• Award of Merit Medal for the Novel from the
  American Academy of Letters that same year
• Nobel Prize in Literature came in 1954, "for his
  mastery of the art of narrative, most recently
  demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for
  the influence that he has exerted on contemporary
  style."
