AGE OF EXPLORATION
  • There were many many people who explored the
    new world at the time of Joliet and Marquette.
    Joliet and Marquette were the first Europeans to
    sail along the Mississippi. The Mississippi is
    one of the most important rivers in the US
    today. It was one of the greatest discoveries of
    there time.

Itroduction
  • Louis Joliet was born in 1645 in Quebec.
  • He was a French Canadian Explorer who led an
    expedition to explore the Mississippi.
  • Jacques Marquette was born in 1637 in Laon,
    France.
  • He met Louis Joliet who asked him to be a part in
    an exploration along the Mississippi River.

The Beginning of the Expedition
  • After hearing rumors about a large river in the
    south Joliet and Marquette went down to begin
    their Journey in 1673.
  • At first they thought that this river would lead
    them to the Pacific but as they went further
    along the river they new that it was leading them
    to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Indians Help
  • The first Indians they saw was in Illinois, the
    Indians were very friendly.
  • They told them information on how long it would
    take them to get further along the Mississippi
    and who they would meet along the way.
  • The Indians told them that the sea was ten days
    away.

Heading Back Home
  • Since they didnt want to get captured by Indians
    or the Spanish they went back.
  • They had said an easier route going back that the
    Indians told them about.
  • On the way back home they got into a canoe
    accident and lost all their records of the
    expedition.
  • Joliet then wrote down all the events that
    happened by memory and published it himself.

Achievements
  • Joliet and Marquette turned out to be the first
    Europeans to ever travel along the Mississippi
    river.
  • The rumor of the large river in the south became
    a fact.
  • Because of his success Joliet was appointed royal
    Hydro gopher.
