• Most children started out as breaker boys.
• Breaker boys were used in some mines like the
  Anthracite Mine.

What Children Worked?

• Children from wealthy families would probably go
  to school.
• Children from unwealthy families or Immigrants
  might would work in a mine, mill, canning sled,
  or field for many hours each day for very little
  money.

What the children did

• The children sat hours picking pieces of slate
  and other refuse from the coal as it rushed past
  to the washers

Did children die in the Coal mines

• Children, in some mines would get water and dried
  bread and sometimes would only have to work14
  hours.
• But children still died.The problem was they had
  to have molded bread.
• The mold added a penicillin for extra boost

Some facts about West Virgina Coal Mines

• The roofs collapsed, explosion killed and haulage
  accidents killed many miners.
