Romanticism

• This period in literature is known as the period
  of Romanticism. Romanticism is characterized by
  a greater emphasis on nature, the individual, and
  expressing a variety of emotions.

• Philosophical literary movement that
  emphasized living a simple life and celebrated
  the truth found in nature and in personal emotion
  imagination

Hudson River School

• Art from this time period also helped to promote
  a sense of Nationalism. The Hudson River School
  was a group of artists who attempted to show
  American superiority by painting landscapes or
  scenes of the natural beauty.

James Fenimore Cooper

• Most of his novels were set in a frontier setting
  that emphasized the individual spirit of
  Americans. His best known work is the Last of
  the Mohicans.

  Transcendentalism.
• Transcendentalism emphasizes a love of nature and
  the individual.
