3
We begin our journey with the atom
  • The atom is the smallest particle that maintains
    its properties
  • Remember! The atom is made of protons, neutrons
    and electrons

4
Next, the molecule
  • Two or more atoms bonded together

Fat
5
Followed by the organelle
  • Remember organelle means little organ
  • Several molecules bonded together form the
organelles, which are found inside of your cells

6
And then, the cell
  • The basic unit of structure and function of
    living things

7
We interrupt this story for a quick review
  • The three parts of the cell theory are
  • All living things are made up of one or more
    cells
  • Cells are the basic units of structure and
    function in living things
  • Cells come only from other living cells

8
Now back to your regularly scheduled PowerPoint
9
Which makes up the tissues
  • A group of cells that look alike and work together

10
Kinds of tissue
  • Muscle tissue made of cells that can become
    shorter (contract) and move bones

11
  • Epithelial (covering) tissue made of epithelial
cells that are tightly joined together, protect
    the body (our skin!)

12
  • Kleenex tissue used to blow your nose

13
  • Connective tissue these cells work together to
hold parts of the body together.
  • Examples include bone, ligaments, tendons and
    blood

14
  • Nerve tissue made up of nerve cells or neurons,
and carries messages throughout the body
  • Nerve tissue makes up most of your brain and
    spinal cord
  • Nerves make muscles act, and controls breathing,
    digestion and heartbeat

15
And tissues make up organs
  • A group of two or more tissues that work together
    to do a special job
  • Examples include the heart, brain, and stomach

16
The organs make up organ systems
  • Groups of organs working together to carry out
life processes and keep an organism alive
  • Organ systems include digestive, endocrine,
    excretory, circulatory, and nervous

17
And our story comes to an end (for now) with the
organism which is made up of all of the organ
systems functioning together
