  • Know that colonists reached the North American
    continent in 1565 but we will start with the
    first major settlement (Jamestown)
  • 1607-1750
  • Native Americans
  • have been on the continent at least 30 times
    longer than the Europeans
  • There are no written records or stories of what
    Native Americans were doing for all these years

Colonial Period
  • We depend on songs, myths, legends, and artifacts
    to learn of the Native Americans
  • The Puritans
  • were a small group of Europeans that sailed from
    England on the Mayflower in 1620
  • They were religious reformers critical of the
    church and landed in Plymouth Massachusetts

  • Native Americans helped them survive
  • This group was known as Pilgrims or Separatists
  • The Plymouth settlement never grew very large

  • Massachusetts Bay Colony
  • Was larger than the Plymouth settlement and
    eventually engulfs Plymouth
  • Was also founded by religious reformers
  • This group wanted to reform the church within
  • They believed humans exist for the glory of god

  • PredestinationJohn Calvins doctrine that God
    has already decided who will be saved
  • Puritans believed good is accomplished through
    self-discipline and hard work
  • The Southern Planters
  • Differed from New England in climate, crops, and
    social organization

  • Large Plantations existed and black slaves were
    brought in in 1619 to work
  • Slavery existed in every colony
  • Plantation owners were Church of England Members
  • By 1750 Puritanism was in decline everywhere and
    the plantation system was peaking
