CTAP 295 What a difference a
year makes!!

  • I began the year with no idea of how those
    wonderful web pages ever came into being and now

My Expectations
  • Learn to utilize the internet more effectively
  • Help my students to also utilize the internet
    more effectively
  • Gain the skills needed to communicate with
    parents and students through the web

What did I really learn?
  • I learned so much! I learned (over and over
    again !)
  • how to....
  • Upload and download files using FTP
  • Use PowerPoint (this alone was worth the year)
  • Use Excel (you mean I don t need a calculator)
  • Compose a web page and insert hyperlinks and
    targets
  • Copy and insert images from the internet
  • Save files in different formats for different
    uses

Successes
  • As can be seen from the data, students given the
    lesson with access to the computer lab
    experienced more success than those that did not.
  • I was able to get a fully functional web page up
    and running

Successes
  • Students were able to discover the knowledge
    instead of having to be taught
  • I used Power Point to put together presentations
    to students, parents and the school board
  • Excel has given me the ability to quickly input
    and analyze data

Shortcomings
  • I need interactive activities to fully engage
    students
  • I need computers up and running in my classroom
    to take full advantage of the internet
  • I want to fully utilize my districts web site so
    parents and students can access grades and
    worksheets regularly

Student Data
  • Period 2 was my control group. I was not able
    to gain access to the computer lab at the same
    time I took my other classes. So I presented the
    same lesson and worksheet without the internet
    access to back it up.
  • They had an overall improvement of 23

Student Data
  • Period 3 is a freshman Algebra 1 class they are a
    naturally bright and energetic group. They
    couldn't wait to explore on the internet.
  • They had an overall improvement of 110

Student Data
  • Period 5 is a mixed Algebra 1 class. They range
    from sophomores to seniors and many have not had
    great success in math, it can be difficult for
    them. They were more likely to just play versus
    really working on the internet.
  • They had an overall improvement of 60.

  • Period 6 is similar to periods 2 and 3 and is
    also a freshman Algebra 1 class. Since they are
    the last group of the day they tend to be less
    focused but very enthusiastic.
  • Like period 3, they also had an overall
    improvement of 110

Student Data I learned but did they?
  • The internet helped facilitate the learning
    experience
  • Data shows an increase in learning when computers
    were used
  • Power Point presentations bring my instruction
    alive
  • With list of URL s students have made
    investigations on their own

What would I do differently?
  • I would have chosen an earlier lesson to present
    to students so that once I found the shortcomings
    I could have made revisions and presented another
    lesson.
  • I would have made my web more generalized and
    linked to a more specific site so I could also
    use it as a resource for parents
  • I would have gotten DSL so everything I did could
    have been done much more quickly.
