• Demography is the study of

Birth Rate

• It is not the number of births that matter but
  the relationship between the number of births and
  the size of population
• Birth Rate (b) is the number of births for every
  1000 people
• In Canada this is 10 births for every 1000 people

Death Rate

• The Death Rate (d) calculates the number of
  deaths per year for every 1000 people
• In Canada this number is about 7 per year for
  every 1000

The Rate of Natural Increase

• The birth and death rate can be put into a useful
  measurement called the natural rate of increase
• Birth rate (b) - death rate (d) rate of natural
  increase (r).

Compounding

• Doubling Time - is the time it would take for a
  countrys population to double at the countrys
  current rate of population growth
• Rule of 70 - is when you divide 70 by the
  population growth rate to estimate how many years
  it will take for the countrys population to
  double
