Assignment of Presentation

• Everyone will report twice during this semester,
  except for Miao-Chan (Eilish) because she will be
  leaving to Yale University on April 1 for 9
  months.
• Exchange of presentation schedule is permitted.
• You may present whatever you like to present,
  although research status is preferred.

A Special Honor from APL

• Our APL paper Advantages of blue InGaN
  multiple-quantum well light-emitting diodes with
  InGaN barriers APL 95(1) 011116, 10 July 2009
  was one of APL's monthly top 20 most-downloaded
  articles in year 2010.

Cooperation with EpiStar Corporation

• Cooperation between EpiStar Corp. and B.L.L. will
  continue this year.
• Although Eilish will be staying at Yale Univ.
  most of the time this year, Jih-Yuan might be of
  great help for this collaboration project as he
  will become a full-time Ph.D. student starting
  from this summer.

SimuLED SimuLAMP Programs

• The one-year trial use of the SimuLED and
  SimuLAMP simulation programs, granted by STR
  Group/????, will come to an end within a month.
• New versions might be available.
• Jih-Yuan will check if these programs are useful
  for our researches.

NSC Student Projects

• Two projects will be applied by Fang-Ming and
  Yu-Rui.
• Application process need to be completed by March
  3.
• The project is from July 1, 2011 to February 28,
  2012. Results of applications should be available
  by June 30 (near June 25).

Proposal Meetings by April 30

• The proposal meetings of Ya-Hsuan and Li-Wei need
  to be held by April 30.
• PowerPoint files need to be finalized by April
  20.
• Drafts of Masters theses are optional for
  proposal meeting.

Theses Defense by July 31

• The theses defense of Bing-Cheng, Ya-Hsuan, and
  Li-Wei need to held by July 31.
• Bing-Cheng may defend your thesis at an earlier
  time.
• The draft of Bing-Chengs thesis should be
  finalized by May 15.
• The drafts of Ya-Hsuans and Li-Weis theses
  should be finalized by June 15.

Do We Have Opening for New Students?

• The seats in lab are all occupied at present.
• Yang-Da and Jih-Yuan need to share a seat this
  semester. Chia-Chi and Tsun-Hsin need to share a
  seat this semester. Sorry for the inconvenience!
• It is possible that I will hire a post-doctoral
  research fellow in the near future.
• We will have four students graduating by July 31.
• We may have a maximum of two new students. It is
  okay that we do not have new students this year.

What Do I Expect from My Students?

• I want you to be well trained in your field of
  research.
• I want you to be good in English presentation.
• I want you to be good in paper writing.
• I want you to be better than me.
• I want you to be happy.

What if You Dont Study Hard?

• It is my hope that students would study hard
  during their stay at Blue Laser Lab.
• For those who do not work hard, they will
  graduate provided that their theses are
  acceptable to the committee of thesis defense.
• You never know how the personality of a student
  can affect his/her life/career in the long run.

Tradition of B.L.L.

• The graduate students need to beat me in running
  4000 meters (2800 meters for female students)
  right after the thesis defense in order to get my
  approval for graduation.
• We will do running or jogging after the group
  meetings. Hopefully, this will become another
  tradition of B.L.L.

• Do your best.
• Success does not come to you all the time.
• People can learn mistakes too.
